firstly hello , i am ian from cambs and i currently a non camaro owner :( but for some reason i must have one in my life , i currently run a 89 celica which has been a rolling road project over the past couple of years , but i am concidering a change , due to the fact i am getting fed up being underneath it nearly every weekend , naturally my next car should (and still could be) another celica (poss a gt4) but to get a good one you are looking at 4-5k which as you know thats about the price a good gen 4 camaro cost , i have seen a great looking 94 z28 v8 for sale locally (bit over priced but it a recession you know) but its in REALLY spotless condition and low low milage and i am seriously tempted , and it looks fantastic, insurance isnt an issue as i am 36 a few years ncb and may even be able to blag my current classic car insurance over to it

my main questions are what genuine mpg will the little ole 5.7 v8 be doing on short journeys , i have heard 20mpg on a very good day , but my run to work is only 3 miles each way , and the choke is on for half of that with the celica , and the only time i have been in a v8 was my mates 4.2 jag , which with the choke on was running at 4mpg ! can i expect more ?

secondly what should i look for (problem wise) with a 94 gen 4

last but not least were are the best place's to get parts , i guess halfords is out of the question :lol: , i nearly purchased a 79 camaro rs instead of the celica 2 years ago , but there was some serious chassis rot (no inner wing for a start) and the old v6 hadn't ran for 2 years and parts was my biggest concern , so i didn't fork out the massive £500 the chap wanted for it , shame about the rot as the interior was very clean for the year and bar some surface rust , the body work was not that bad either

Hi & Welcome

Well the first thing I wonder is why do you care about mpg and why also would you want to run it on short journeys ?

Anyway, that aside you can epect much more than 4mpg. I drove my new Z28 about 800 miles last wekeend and got at least 25mpg. To be honest I've not calculated more accurately than that yet because I've not driven it enough but it's economy is perfectly acceptable to me. If I want 50mpg then I'd but a Smart car.

Parts can be bought from many of the American car suppliers in the UK. There are loads so I won't name any. You might also find service items on eBay from time to time. There are quite a few Camaro owners in the UK and don't forget they share alot of parts the Trans Am/Firebird and some engine components with the Corvette.

Personally, I set aside all the usual worries that one might have with cars and treat it like a hobby. I don't use mine for buying milk and a newspaper from the shop just 30 seconds walk from my house and I don't use it for work. In fact, you may laugh but I picked up a 1996 Ford Escort 1.4 estate last night just for winter hacking !! My babies can now be garaged until it warms up.

This is a great site and most of the others will offer better advice than me because I'm only a newbie Camaro owner.

I say go and buy that Z28 whatever it costs and have yourself some fun.

Personally i would go with a 3rd gen Iroc but i am a bit biased, I have driven most cars and nothing beats an american car for torque,A good running TPI motor should get you around 30mpg on motorway and around 25mpg around town but it is rare as you tend to put your foot down more in a powerful car, If you need any advice or parts just let me know.

i wish i could get away with running a winter hacker , and garaging my big boys toy , but in my house hold we only have 2 cars (and no garage ), one being mums car , currently a 07 plate vectra with tastefull mods including 2 boosters seats and a baby seat , that is used for taking the kids to school , getting wife to work , shopping and genaral family hualage

and the other is dads car (mine) which only runs me to work , buys the newspapers from the shop :P and for general showing off (arm out of the window stuff trying to look cool and half my age :lol: ) my only concerns about the mpg is i cant warrant spending £30 per week running a car like this to work , i dont mind if i am getting 20-25 ish on a run going to a show etc , its just the daily living with , my next car has to last me several years and due to depretiation on new cars i prefer to have something a bit more classic , buying the camaro ticks nearly all of my boxes , its retro , loud , not going to lose lots of money ,its different and low milage , but is buying this car would be with my heart not my head , i just want to convince my head

Yeah go for it. It's not going to be cheap to run or cheap to look after especially if it's only doing 5 miles a day and not allowed to warm up properly but it is different and a bit more fun than an old MR2.

Rocky goes with a 3rd gen. IROC because he has a garage and knows them inside out, outside in :D . He's also a supplier of parts and frequents many a forum too so a good person to ask for technical advice.

ide go and get one, my camaro's honoured i rent a big unit for it to sit in, its only got wet the day i brought it home, ide still have an every day car if i were u, i tried using my old one every day but was too thirsty

id DEF go for a 3rd gen, theyre definately without doubt better looking, more classic lookin and ive jus bot my 1st yank in december and the fuel shocked me.its bloody brilliant!!!i dont no exactly mpg, but it aint much more than my 1.9 pug 205 gti (my 'other car')or its ment 2 b! i jump in the camaro an my mum pratically has 2 prize me out!i just cant stop driving it, its an 86 5ltr tpi, i got mine for 2.5k and its mint, geta look at my pics if u can? failing that, u want something classic an cheapish, a ford capri :) amy x

i cant have another capri , they are my elinor ? i keep bloody crashing them , i do love the gen3 but i just want something newer (less repairs) i have just spent 2 years repairing my celica and its still a shed , i want to enjoy

Just seen ur pics, we got the same car, hope mine looks that good when its done, im so close to having it sorted
