I'm looking to stock up on a few oil filters and I was looking to know what people use, or direct me on what I should be using? I have a Small Block 400 which runs quite high oil pressure with a high volume + high pressure oil pump.
I have the space and clearance available to fit in a larger filter, and after changing the oil and filter after the initial start up and break in, I put on a K&N HP-2002. It doesn't have an Anti-Drainback Valve or Filter Bypass Relief Valve. I've always been taught to go with a decent filter and change it regularly to avoid clogging, than to opt for one with a Filter By Pass Valve which could allow contaminants back into the block. I've also been taught that Anti-Drainback Valve's hinder flow & pressure, and the benefits don't outweigh the drawbacks.
But should a filter with an Anti-Drainback Valve or Filter Bypass Relief Valve be something that I should have? Or does it matter that much if they are there or not? I'd be concerned about lack of oil round the block on start up especially if the car has been sitting for a few weeks [or a month or 2 over winter], but how much oil does a small silicon ring actually retain and should I be that concerned?
I've never had any bother with K&N oil filters, and have used them on every car I've owned despite them sometimes being a bit more pricey than alternatives.
Fluids and filters will be changed on a yearly basis anyhow with at most 750-1250 miles a year [Irish weather permitting
