compared to my other vehicles the firebird seems fast but it would be nice to eventually have a car that can kick supercar ass....

Be careful what you wish for Steve, I had a friend years ago who had a nice streetable '69 Firebird 400 ,to cut a long story short he got into drag racing and started chasing times...
Car got faster but less streetable , more and more money spent, car got used less and less.
In the end it was an 8 mpg car and he ended up selling it and emigrating.All happened back in the day when gas was still relatively cheap.

I can relate to that too, my old '55 Chevy would run mid 10's @135 mph & was street legal, but with a 468 cu in motor & tunnel ram it would return around 4 mpg if used with a heavy right foot. I could easily empty the 16 gallon tank on a night out. That certainly takes the fun out of things after a while.

To be perfectly honest, the most fun car I've had was probably my 300 hp '69 Firebird or my old '72 400 cu in Trans Am. Both cars were quite mild to drive, but gave you reasonable performance, both lived out doors & I wasn't too precious about them, to the point of using them as a daily driver. Sometimes you can become a slave to your cars, especially when highly modified with a shed load of money invested

Dave at Enfield we spoke to the fella with the black pro street 69 firebird and he said he regretted it and wish he left it mild...
mine starts every time can get 20 mpg if driven gently and can still kick the boy racers arses

ps my oldest daughter is trying to talk my wife into getting rid of her isuzu and getting a ford/chevy truck and at the moment she aint having none of it but summers coming

I think I've seen that black Pro-Street Firebird too..

I'm kind of on the border with that... Mine's so close to a circuit track car spec, it's not as pleasant a drive as it could be sometimes, but just about useable enough, in hindsight I'd do things a little different now.. (not much though )

I guess it is nice to have the experience of a 10 sec street car but 4mpg would take some of the pleasure away for me.
Like you Nige my fun memories are of my old 2nd gen '73 with a 307 2barrel Holley and some wide steels and cherry bombs ( it was rough but taught me a lot ! )
You are right on the Slave to our cars point as well, I always enjoyed the shows, meets and road trips more than the garage side of the scene...
Wish I had the money to let Chip Foose or someone in that league loose on my Firebird, beats rolling around on concrete with rust falling all about

Ask me how I know this...my coupe is making slow progress but my rag top has sat under cover for too long.
Sometimes life throws obstacles in the way of the best plans and finding the money for 2 projects can strain the budget as well as the will to persevere .
