Is there a way of adjusting the shift points or is the gearbox controlled by the ECM.
On mine, First to second is almost instant, as soon as i touch the throttle.

Is yours the last of the 5.7 TPI motors if so is your Throttle position cable set right, BEFORE YOU TOUCH IT TAKE A PIC OR MARK IT, then look up how to adjust it, this cable is part of how it knows when to be in what gear but not all of it.

Mine is a 5.0L TBI, I have adjusted the cable by pushing in the tab and sliding the cable , but it went back to where is was to start with, so i have left it like that. I guess i will have to put up with it.

OK now that we know that is adjusted correctly we can move on

The shift points are controlled by 2 other things which are the computer(ECU) and the govnor.

The light throttle by the ECU and this is set up for mph and is roughly 1st to 2nd at between 15 and 20mph and 2nd to 3rd between 25 and 30 mph and 3rd to 4th at 40 to 50mph, this is on the flat with very light throttle loading and is also dependant on tyre sizes, so it may seem that its almost instant from first to second under these conditions.

The Govnor valve controls the heavy of full throttle loading and can be altered by fitting lighter springs to it or removing one spring from one of the weights.

I would like to add that I would only play with your shift points if you are confident with what you are doing and if you intend racing, I've driven some quite unpleasant "modified gearboxes" in my time, extra fuel and stress on components and in my case stress on my body

Have fun and remember I didn't brake it :)
