So i took the car into the garage to have a new starter, a simple half hour job i thought. it has been playing up, sort of like when you turn the key it would just click, like a stuck solenoid. If you keep turning the key it would eventually engage. Two hours later they pushed it out, it is dead. What areas of the starting circuit should i be looking at, are there any known dodgy relays, it cant be that difficult, its a simple curcuit, isnt it?

They should have really tested the crank wire first, check the 3amp crank fuse first just to see if they caught it and blew the fuse.

When i was volt testing my 2nd gen (back of fusebox that is visible when inside the engine bay) i accidentally touched a couple of points with one of the probe ends and it just happened to be the 2x terminal points for the starter. Scared the sh*t out of me and luckily the car was in park. So that makes me think, you could maybe located the 2 points and touch a heavy gauge wire against them? I like Rocky's idea though, sounds safer :)

Im going to start at the obvious first, the fuse. Then the starter relay, if i can find it, It has been starting fine, okay it takes a few turns of the key to get the starter to engage, but it starts, the mechanic started it and drove onto the ramp. He put the new starter on the car and nothing, not even a click from the solenoid, he tested both starters on the floor and they are both fine, so how can it go from starting to nothing just by swapping over the starters. It has to be something so simple.

The news is; One of the previous owners had put in a modern alarm system and this had an engine immobiliser. The Vats looks like it has allready been bypassed in some way and The ignition wiring has been so butchered that some of the wires had welded themselves together, the electrician had never seen such a mess he was supprised there hasnt been a fire. He is going to bypass what is left of the ignition switch and install a push button starter switch to get the car started, and i think the starter relay will also be bypassed.
