Hi,

if I do a head/cam swap on my 1997 Z28 my LT1 will come alive.........but, will my transmission die!?

On the US boards some guys claim to run some big power through them, but they generally have a poor reputaion. I was unable to find many horror stoiries about them giving up despite this.

Any thoughts? Where should I look for a tranny upgrade?

Cheers!

it will die eventually, some guys I know said they killed on with bolt-ons, others lasted a season or 2 at the strip with H/C swaps and then went. Essentially its the clutches and sunshell that go, as you can do a cheap and nasty clutch pack as get the tranny to last a bit longer. The guys at eatmyshift.com seem knowledgeable and gave me a quote of $2500 for late type 4L60E built to stand 700 hp with a 3500 stall (in US) there are UK specialist but im sure they put the 'american car' prices on ie 3x shipping it yourself

It you treat the tranny with respect, just normal pottering, not many WOT kickdowns and not too much racing, then it will last a bit longer...maybe

Basically as you will have read, the drive lines on the 4th gens are weak compared to the power the cars put down but there are dudes running stock diffs with supercharges, but dont race with slicks

In short, yes it will give up eventually, when is a matter of driving style. Also Chris, im sure your tranny might have had some work already, a shift kit or something with you mentioning the shift are harder??

Yes,

my favourite quote was "do whatever makes you feel happy...but don't be too suprised when something breaks". A bit like the t-shirt I saw at Santa Pod...."What can possibly go wrong in 5 seconds?"

It's a case of how long is a piece of string. Transmissions fail on the way to the shops....hammering it just makes it more likely.

Having it "built" would certainly bring peace of mind. I saw one spec saying they were good for 360lb ft, the Trick flow kit gives just over 400, the Edelbrock just under, from memory, exceeding tolerance by 10/11%, over a resonably large rev range for the trickflow setup.

So I suppose that answers my own question.... do I feel lucky?

As for my trans, could be Electronic Pressure Control solenoid failed, making the drop into first a bit erm lively? Maybe its been tinkered with like you say. Should have got a Corsa...... lol
