Sorry i have the 79 front lights and those have the twist lock at the back to get the bulb out, so can't help you here i'm afraid

Very strange they the lenses are glued in. I actually purchased clear lenses for the front on my 79 and they (NPD) said you can only the housing with lens included,not just the lens on its own. I think for a 70-73 this is different though, have a look at the link below and go to page 120. it shows how it looks standalone, so perhaps it's sealant that appears to be glue due to age? maybe time to get a small knife and dig it out?

Thanks for that link to the LED!!! that's just what will solve our issues front and back with only wiring mods I will chase down some UK companies for these, otherwise i'll be in the states next month if you want to save shipping etc.

P.s paint took longer thatn expected over the weeked so gonna look at lights this week/end.

I have skimmed the 4 pages of replies so please forgive me if i missed anything already mentioned but i wanted to add a little here as i went through a bit with my 79 and thought it may be helpful.

I too converted my front lights to halogen, i basically binned the sealed beam lights and bought a standard mini unit that took a halogen bulb, making sure i got the version with the small side light attachment underneath the main bulb. This was a simple swap to change the running/driving lights from the front lights to the sidelight bulb that pushes in to the mini headlamp unit sidelight socket (hole). as part of the mini lights i seem to remember ordering at the same time, a small sidelight bulb holder which was rubber and pushes in to the small hole underneath where the main halogen bulb clips in. This left the front driving lights with only the indicator operation left. When i was rewiring the indicators or was trying to get an orange bulb to fit, something snapped off and so i drilled all the way through the plastic and glued in a metal bulb holder. As for the rear of the car i was pretty fortunate as my 79 has orange lenses for the indicators. However after 8 years of MOTing the car, it failed last year on not having a rear fog light. as i do not like spoiling the lines of the car with a fog light off the rear bumper i checked on the internet for the exact year requirement for one. As far as i remember it is mid 1980 that is the required year for having a fog light on an imported car. so i printed it out and took it along to the retest. that was the only time i have been asked, this year it passed with no questions.
You might also want to double check what year of car you are required to change the indicators to yellow/amber, you might be lucky and be ok with red lenses. Also i have heard that some people put green indicator bulbs in the red lenses and it makes it a lot more yellow. that could be worth a go too :-)

Well I am very depressed. I just had a look through Flak Monkey's messages re all the work he's done on his 80 Camaro and here's me can't even fit a set of bloody headlight units with sidelights incorporated. When I did it on my 71 Mustang they just fitted in no problem but on the Camaro there is no clearance between the headlight unit and the headlight bowl. I managed to break the sidelight bulb holder as the sprung spade for the live feed pushed through the fitting when I tried the unit up for size. The tag for earth comes out at right angles so that was ok. I soldered the live feed to the bulb to try and gain clearance but even that does not allow the light unit to seat properly. Being such an original car I don't want to cut stuff about. I must admit the units I bought are some non descript make. I think I'll try buying another set. I'm pretty sure the ones I fitted to the Mustang were from Ring - perhaps there is a slight difference in design that will allow more clearance. So much for the 5 minute job I thought it would be!

5 minute jobs tend to be the worst type of job! not good news, so where are you at now?

Does your sidelight at the front have 2 connections for the bulb, so you have 1 circuit for sidelight and the other circuit for the brighter flasher?

If so, go with the dual LED flashers from a couple of pages back, this is what i will be doing

This should help you keep the factory finish on the car as you're right, you dont want to start drilling and messing up the care etc.

Had another fiddle around with them last night. The light units have three, unequal spaced, lugs around the outside which are meant to locate in the recesses in the headlight bowl. For some odd reason if you position the light unit so the lugs are located properly in the bowl unit the light is more or less updide down??!! I can't see how the headlight bowl could have been fitted incorrectly as all the necessary spring clip / screw adjusters match up. I got the old sealed beam unti out and the lugs are in the same place as the unit I have just bought so I can only assume the old sealed beam unit was not located by the lugs but only by the chrome ring. As the lugs on the light unit effectively sit on the rim of the bowl and not in the recesses it should give more clearance for the side light unit. Mind you that can wait until the weekend. I now seem to have a duff battery as the car won't start - just hope that's not a sign of another problem! - ho hum.
BTY I decided I don't really want to go the led route as you need to change the flasher relay etc and it all seemed to be getting too much of an effort. although if the clearance issue isn't solved as I hope then I may change my mind!!

Hmm, ok so there is a recent theme here of things being simpler than we thought (you read that thread about the twisting the light swtich to turn off interior lights? - even though i contributed to that i then went and had the same issue and spent 2 nights tryng to find a short circuit, to then realise i needed to just turn the switch )

So my thought? swap the headlights over. They probably were taken off at some point, then someone put them back on the wrong side. It sounds like it could work? other than that i have no further ideas yet...

Any updates on what you're doing with your light conversion? I managed to get the reverse light working as clear reverse light and an amber indicator with only a minor wiring change. Cheers!
