Can anyone who has a 98-02 V6 Camaro confirm that the tranny belhousing is the 1 pce and not the 2 pce (split) belhousing?
Reason I'm asking is that I've also been looking into getting a remanufactured tranny from the states, but one of the guys I've been speaking to seems to think my car is a 97 because of the 1 pce belhousing on my tranny!!! It's definitely a 98 so I hope the guy is speaking thru a hole in his head!

Cheers
DS

dude, I dont think there is too much of an issue even if it is 2 piece? As long as the bolts all line up then it wont matter. What did the guys at the salvage yard with the 98 camaro and 02 TA says? One or 2 piece. Also i'd get a post on the US site, See what they think. Lots of v6 Guys there. But as you know, lots of 'think we know' people too.

I wish you lived closer, I'd bob round for a gander and help ya sort it out. Have you had the gearbox sump dropped yet to see if it's full of metal??

Hey Maudy, thanks for the support on this m8.

The trouble is the car is with the guy that’ll be putting on the replacement tranny and he’s 3 hours away from me. He’s the only American car specialist in Scotland and he’s been in the business for over 30 years, he’s now semi-retired but a good guy (especially as he’s been lumbered with my car for the last 2 months) and I trust what he’s saying when he says it won’t fit. He’ll put the replacement on but he doesn’t do rebuilding etc either. He’s had a tranny guy test it out and sounds like it is the ‘planetary gears’. The salvage yard is a pain in the butt and really unhelpful, but I’ll keep trying to get some more info off them. As they don’t offer any refunds or exchanges, £500 is a lot to lose if its not compatible or doesn’t fit, I’m already down about £150 for the postage for the 97 tranny. I tell ya, I’ve posted on almost every US Camaro related site on the Internet and everyone seems to be really knowledgeable, even if they are contradicting each other. Most think it will work OK, but some apparently knowledgeable guys are saying it won’t because of the year difference, electrical differences, different connectors etc, damn frustrating!! As you say ‘lots of 'think we know' people’ so getting nowhere fast. Even looking into getting a remanufactured one shipped over from the US, but the one guy I’ve been talking to seems convinced that the 98 has the split 2 pce belhousing, whereas I know that it is the one pce!!!! Jeez!!

Regards
DS

not a problem, just trying to get another busted camaro back on the streets :)

Yeah, if its a horrid grinding that prob the problem OR a crached sun gear, but still rebuild jobby or replace. I might be down santa pod in a month or so and if you havent got it sorted i'll go to the scrappers and have a look at that v6 for ya. I'll check their time table. Also got a pal somewhere near who migh be able to investigate. Ill keep you posted, but see what the yanks say. It can be a minefield of information, some of it a look of s**t :O

OK, took the plunge and got the Firebird gearbox, now in car and looking good  after 3 months off the road!
However, I think with the car sitting outside in the cr*p weather, its got damp or something.
I'm losing power, occasional backfire, car struggling a bit when accelarating, EML came on briefly, then went off.
Very similar to what I had before, changed out spark plugs and leads and that sorted it last time, so shouldn't be that again. Possible the coils need dryed out/replaced?
I'll run a diagnostic tonight to see if any fault codes come up and post back.

Regards
DS

Nope, no fault codes coming up!
Got it booked into garage tomorrow to check if the ignition coils are the problem.
I'll post back.

Regards
DS

Edit: Hmmm, garage says the coils are sparking ok, but I'm not convinced!
The problem seems to only occur under load, so probably ok at idle when they were testing!
