That primer is looking good :thumbup:
I'm at a similar stage with my coupe -shell and doors and smaller pieces in primer but now comes the crucial stage of guide coat and the hell of eliminating high/low spots.
Think I have a bad case of Project Fatigue as I took a break and went to the Hot Rod Drags at the weekend...really should be working on the car every spare moment .
Looking forward to seeing your next paint installment as it may help me with my car ...

Thanks for positive comments! it is nice to be able to see it in one colour. @Firebird, do you have an pics of yours? Likewise, it will be some inspiration to see the progress of yours :thumbup: I've had the project fatigue a few times too, i find that sometimes stepping away for a bit actually helps, it brings things back into perspective and can help with bringing new energy into it. Gets rid of the repetitive nature of it. Otherwise i find that i've made mistakes because something would be taking too long and i just wanted it done, so short cut it, rather than doing the right thing. Then of course, you have to redo it, which is usually more difficult lol.

@twsitedsanity... luckily, the lump and tranny are all in - 350 block and th350 with B&M shifter. There is a manual 4speed super t10 going in (hey Nige :wave: ), but that will be after the car is driving and on the road. For the colour, it's going to be red, already got the paint and it's just waiting for me to get my act together. As for what it is when it's done? Erm, good question lol. I don't really know. Probably a custom / cruiser? The backstory is that since i was very young, i've always loved American cars and always wanted one. For a long time i was into the 50's classics, things with tailfins, bench seats, lots of chrome and required an oversized parking bay. Playing racing games i always used to pic the america cars, like Chevelles etc. Even though they would bounce about and i couldn't win, i just liked the experience of 'driving' them. So when i got the Camaro, i was just happy to have a V8. I was ok with it as is, just the interior sucked, especially with those blue house carpets. The previous owner was a smoker so everything had a smell to it. That's why the interior got pulled out and that was supposed to be it.. just get a nice black leather interior put together and enjoy. I've always liked customising / modifying things and doing 'trick' things so the plan was to just do a few things here and there. But when the interior came out, i found the rust and it just all went down hill as the domino effect kicked in. I think i had a false sense of power lol... you know, i took apart the interior and was gonna make it all new etc, so thought why stop there, i can do this to the whole car and make everything look new. Big mistake haha.

As the project has taken so long, i've picked up many different influences along the way, which is why it's hard to define what it is. I've watched shows like overhaulin, youtube restorations, forum restorations etc so i've seen and liked everything from going back to factory to the seriously modified ones, to the trans am racers, to those that pay homage to old racers but with modern technology, to those that are standard with a couple of small touches to improve performance / looks etc. So i've kinda taken bits of each i guess. Probably not a good thing lol.

One of the things i also wanted to do was learn to work on cars, which is likely why i got involved on many parts that weren't expected i.e suspension. It's surprising how many people are afraid to or don't know how to change an air filter or especially the oil in their cars, so would rather pay £100's for a service... no thanks lol, i want to be able to have the basic mechanical know how to do those types of things and not be scared to fix things and just 'buy a new one' when something goes wrong. Tangent... it's funny how there's all this focus on saving the environment etc but things are being made to be thrown out and replaced with a new one, rather than educating people on how to fix things, meaning we don't have huge landfills of useable stuff and extracting more resources to create whole new things, rather than just changing out a small broken part. Tangent over :)

So ye, i don't really know how to classify it. I want to say custom, but at the same time it doesn't have things like shaved door handles and the paint won't turn out like glass. It does have some changes to it that i haven't shown yet, i will reveal once it's painted and put together :thumbup: It's not a racer as i didn't want to modify the suspension to the level it would need to be to be competitive, though, i would like to have a race version. Maybe something like a pro touring one, but still want it to be driveable without overly stiff suspension and high fuel consumption. I still want to be able to get in it and just go for a drive. I like the kind of style that Chip Foose does (i'm by no means comparing my work to his lol, that would be a plain insult to him!). I like how he works with a car to compliment it based o the original design, tidying up certain parts i.e flushed bumpers, giving them a more clean modern style - when you see a Foose car, it doesn't look old, just classy. He usually has a good way of making something look as though it was made to be that way back in the day , but it also could be a modern car... best example i can think of is the Eleanor '67 GT500 - classic but modern. So in a way, the Camaro is my interpretation or version of the Camaro, the way that i see it. I don't have a committee and stakeholders to answer to, so i can make it kind of how i like, taking inspiration from here and there and not necessarily being constrained to certain things (my lack of skills being the main constraint) . One small example i can give is that the light switch was a bit dodgy so i got a new one but chose to go for a '69 knob. In my opinion it looked better as it looks a bit classier as it has the the little chrome ring. It fits in with the gauges (made a custom gauge cluster and have black and chrome gauges). A perfectionist would comment on how it's not year correct but it's a small detail and when you compare the 2, the 69 knob just seems to fit in better, cleaning up the look of the dash. So ye, it's those kind of things that make it, i guess... mine?

Little update, the hood, bumpers and shell are in 320 and the pinholes / low spots that i could find are now filled. Gotta 320 wet sand the doors, boot, fenders, spoilers and mirrors and fill any pinholes. Kind of need to do that all by today so that i can also re-prime today / tomorrow evening, as i'm away with work next week (including the weekend :( ) Then i've got friends visiting from the states for a couple of weeks, so the soonest i can get back to is around the 16th October. I'll need to the sand the second batch of primer in 600 (thanks for the tip on not going with 800 Nige, anything that helps save time at this point is much appreciated). Not sure whether or not to go with 2 or 3 coats of primer for this reprime. Once it's all in 600 then i can finally paint it. I'm starting to get worried / anxious now about the weather in regards to temp and humidity. I really wanted to be paining when it was about 20c, but it looks like it will now be at the end of October :( The first time i painted it, it was October 24th for the interior of the shell and the miscellaneous parts. I then got around to painting the main panels on November 10th and it was about 6 or 9 degrees outside (managed to get the room to about 12 degrees, not exactly ideal). Really wish i didn't have to be away next week.

Ray , I will try to post up some of my recent work ,but to be honest I don't find the time to take pictures as I find it enough of a struggle to get the work done ...
Lack of time is my biggest enemy and working on my project after a day at work is often more of a chore than something I really enjoy , but it will be worth it in the end when I am back on the road .

Hats off to guys like Cowman and Flak monkey for doing expert build threads 8-)
I have been out laying on some white hi- build primer this morning and will go over it with a dark grey to show up the areas that want more attention ...
I tend to go slow as I only use hand tools ( Longbed sanders 2 long and short rigid an 2 short ) because power sanders speed things up for a pro, but can cause problems for the less experienced body/paint men like me ...
Hoping to be driving it by next Summer ...
You are right about the weather ,soon the cold and damp will be back always a race against time in the short summer season , must do as much as I can before the weather turns .

I know what you mean about the work part, that's why i only sporadically update this thread. Recently i have been doing a full days work at work (im not one to early or on time either :( ) and then i've been on the car till about 1am, a few times till 3am. Was absolutely exhausted on Friday after work (worked 9am till 10pm due to this upcoming conference) so i slept way in on Saturday and was basically a zombie so did what i could on the car. Just stopped about half an hour ago. Got everything done apart from the spoilers and drivers side fender, so of course i couldnlt paint the second stage of primer :( I'll hopefully get the driver fender wet sanded tomorrow after work, then up stupidly early on Tuesday for a flight :( As much as i'm not a fan of these late nights in the garage, i would much prefer to spend the week in the garage than be away. Should hopefully be able to get it all into primer next week as i'll have a couple of nights free before i'm off again.

I'm using the durablock 7 piece sanding set that i got from Frost. Largest block in there is a 16" which has been quite useful. I also made (thanks to advice from Rocky / Flakmonkey (it was a long while ago)) a long block from a length of floor board (the laminate stuff). It's about 1 cm or so thick, so it holds itself but will curve to the contours, so its about the right rigidity. Put a couple of handles on it, its about the length of the door. Helped greatly for the roof and of course with a larger surface area, it speeds things up a lot too as there's more surface contact being made (the first time i did the car in 2010, it was done by a small 6" rigid hand block, the type you get at b&q. Imagine how long that took! I had a lot to learn, still do!) . I've also very kindly asked my friend to bring a Durablock marine block (30") from the states next week as no one seems to sell them here, but shipping is double the price of the block. After having used that long piece of wood that's about the length of the door to sand the door, it still isn't perfect :( Just goes to show how easy some people make it look and how commendable their work is. I tried so hard to get these doors right... i did as much metal work as i could, taking my time and not rushing it, then when it came to the filler stage i was generous with how much went on so that i could have plenty to sand and not worry about hitting metal and refilling over and over (sanded off a hell of a lot by the time i hit metal), then i went over it with glaze so that the finer grits could be used, all of that using tape lines, a looong block, guide coat and lots of patience.. and still it did not come out perfect. Definitely hats off to people like flakmonkey (seen his car in the flesh), Nige (also seen in the flesh) etc who make a car look like a mirror from any angle without defects. Don't know how they do it!

Back from Prague, saw a nice Impala out there, pic is on my phone though. I was exhausted last week (still haven't recovered), getting an average of 3-4 hours sleep each night then working all day :yawn: Was too tired to do any work on the car on Monday night. Last night i managed to finish sanding the drivers fender (inside and out :crazy: ). Didn't manage to get the spoilers and mirrors done. Few pinholes to fill on the fender and found a couple on the bumper that i missed. Need to try and take care of those tonight, so that i can repaint everything with primer tonight.

Work starts again tomorrow evening. Gotta get the last few pinholes filled on the inner fender, give it all clean, then re-primer on Thursday and Friday. Then it's time to sand in 600 and hopefully get no breakthroughs, which means it's paint time. Really got to knock the work out while we have these last few weeks of decent weather. Then it's time to reassemble, get the glass in, weld in the sfc's, start the engine, install the exhaust, then take care of any miscellaneous items - add fluids, bleed brakes etc.

Filled the pinholes but had no energy left to sand them down, exhausted from travelling for the last 4 weeks :tired:

Should be able to sand them tomorrow, then need to 320 sand the rear spoilers and mirrors, forgot about those. Should be able to reprimer over the weekend.
