I'm thinking it's possibly better to buy a brand new part, rather than risk a worn steering box. Not entirely sure what to do?

I wouldn't even think about steering boxes until every thing else had been eliminated first... and that's alot of other components

What about the power steering pump and reservoir, topped up, all in place and working ?

Give that try and then see how it is. If it's still the same, then reading through all the comments, it sounds like you have what Sportsroof mentioned:

Sounds like you'll be needing instructions on how to adjust the steering box... be good if it has enough adjustment in it that you don't need to buy a replacement part.

Ahhh...well that's another problematic area. If the wheels are turned from dead centre, any angle further on from circa 20-30 degrees (and not it's worse on dry surfaces) and the there's a loud screeching noise coming from the front end. Being stationery and it's more so than when manouvering.

The mechanic commented that both pulleys ought to have another belt since there's another groove on both of them. Possibly a secondary belt ought to be employed?? I did check the fluid on the pump it's not low and it seems pretty clean, the belt is taught also. Could the pump be at fault then? Perhaps the belt is slipping? Would these issues have an effect on the steering at normal road speeds?
