Oh that is a good idea actually!! i have also learnt that doing anything destructive is a big no so you should always work with what you have, to come up with a better solution, i think it also leads to a more professional finish that way. you are right about the wedge style bulbs - T10 are only 5watt so not enough. i have found some regular bulbs that are indicator replacements and go right up to 30LEDs per bulb and are classed as road legal, these fit the standard bayonet fitting at the front and rear of the car.
I am now thinking maybe to reverse the priority - make the reverse lens the indicator in terms of adapting the wiring and using the coloured bulbs. This was you just need to figure out the reverse lights which arent an MOT requirement so COULD be the LED T10 style bulbs so at least there is something there. You could always install a fog light style reverse light sat opposite the fog light under the bumper? i was thinking of doing the mustang eleanor style reverse lights at one point they sit way down in the bumpers and look pretty hot.
