You must have more P38 dust up your nose by now than any one else in the world.. !!!!!!

Keep up the work young Jedi..... not long now.. :D

If you're stuck for helping hands during heavy reassembly bit I might have the odd few hours free here and there to come down and point, tut, eat biscuits, tell you what you're doing wrong etc.. ..

Yep - I've collected it all and made a body filler dust full size snowman.

Thanks - that's some well needed motivation. Hit one of the lowest motivational points of the project last nsight at about 2am. Much cursing, profanities anger and upset happened. Done the work on the trunk lid last night / this morning, whichever description suits it. Looking at the schedule, i need to spot prime the front end parts tomorrow - parts where i noticed that there were pinholes, so filled them with glaze. Need to sand those areas with 180. Then next, prep the mirrors. Should be doing that right now, but i'm procrastinating. I'll upload some pics and head out afterwards. Cannot wait to sweep up and get rid of all of that sanding dust!

Thank you i appreciate that! If all goes according to the schedule, it should be the very end of this month / start of August that the assembly part happens - i'll keep you updated. You'll be mostly busy telling how wrong i'm doing everything, that's a sure thing!

4 years and 5 months ago i said:

Hello, so i'm just starting the interior restoration on my '79
Then i said that the plan was to:
Quote:
have it finished by my Birthday (20th April) (2010!!)
It's all about the song title:

I managed to get through sanding the spot filler parts from the front end, last night. Decided that it makes more sense to spot primer when i primer the shell, so instead tonight i will be prepping the mirrors and doing the final spot filler / sanding (missed a couple of pinholes and forgot completely to sand down the spot filler on the front bumper).

Need to figure out about the mirrors - when i was on a medication last year that included a decent dose of steroids, not only was i more hungry but had roid rage and launched a 2x2 bit of wood across the garage when something p*ssed me off. that 2x2 made contact with the mirror housing and dented it. In taking the glass out shortly after, to get to the dent, i managed to crack the glass  Got a pair from a swap meet, but last night realised they are slightly different - my ones have a bolt hole in the upper inside of the case, these ones don't. so have to figure out if the glass etc will fit. I also can't take apart the driver side mirror as the hole where the adjustment cable goes through, is too small - it looks as though they fed the cable through, then crimped it into the mechanism. Strange as the ones i have, have a much larger pre drilled hole so i was able to completely disassemble. So anyway, point is, i need to bodywork that dent - hammer and filler, then try and work out how the glass will fit fit into the housing etc and figure something out amongst them all!

So tonight it will be the mirrors and sorting out the already primed parts, to make sure all of the spot filler is sanded and any missed parts have been filled and sanded. yay.

The bs just doesn't stop.
the mirrors from the swap meet have mirror glass that is too big for the housing from mine. The housing of the swap meet does not fit onto the mounting stand piece from mine. So ok, U think well why not use the whole mirror from the swap meet. The f*Ing mounting holes are in different positions??!! Which means drilling extra holes into the door. Wtf. How the hell and why the hell are they different in so many ways. Also, the mount for one side of the swap meet mirror has a hole from where someone drove a screw through it. So if i use that, that needs welding and grinding. Great.
From the mirrors i have, the pass side is dented but the glass intact. The drivers side is intact but glass is broken. One of those 2 has bolts that are sneered off because the nut was stuck thanks to rust. 4 mirrors and not one can be used. None can be put together to make a decent set. F*in b*lox to this sh*t. Why make exactly the same looking mirrors so f*Ing different. What a waste of money and time gm. Seriously wtf.

Explicit content warning... not joking, don't read on if you don't like cursing.

It's all F###. just F###.

Sorted out the mirrors, managed to sort the dent out and it just needed a skim of filler. One of the bases had the bolts knackered, so drilled them out and will need to find self tappers or something like that of that diameter. So it's kind of complete. Not enough to tick it off the list as done of course. Still need a mirror glass - Rockauto have them and at a good price, only about $7. Shiping is $30 though, so that's F### annoying. What's worse is i ordered a couple of parts for the Trans Am from Rockauto on Friday and completely F### forgot about the F### mirror glass until right F### now. So i could have got that sorted but F### forget. F### sake. I sorted the door out on the passenger side, so that's now in 180 grit ready for paint, as is the drivers side rocker panel and drivers side door jam.

I moved onto the quarter on the drivers side and that's now in 120, moved up to the roof and found a couple of very fine imperfections. So used some upol liquid gold on there, sanded, needed a touch more, sanded, needed a touch more. Then i notived some areas of the roof were oilcanning... you know, when you put a bit slight of pressure, it pops down and spirings back up. If you havent seen it in the build thread, the car did have a sun roof. I deleted this, using some sheet metal and taking a very long time to spot weld together, literally all day, to make sure there was no warping. Anyway i must have missed it, it's basically on the rear pass side of where the sun roof would have joined... just further to the back a bit. where i was pushing down on it, it was flexing / oil canning. Well, easy enough to fix right? What's happening is the metal is under tension, so you need to heat and rapdily cool to get the metal to shrink, so that its not under tension anymore. A nice way to do this without an acetalyne torch is to put a spot of mig weld on there and douse with water. So found the tense area, did that and no. Just created another area that was warping. So tried to deal with taht with the same mehtod.. no, caused another F### area to warp. So after a whole F### evening wasted, i have a wavey motherfucking roof that i have absolutely no clue how to F### fix now. Even though i follwed how its supposed to be done to haave it done properly, no. jsut tfor the F### sake of it, no. made it F### way worse and set me god knows how long back. Whatever happens, a F### tonne of filler is gonna need to be skimmed and sanded. More F### dust, sweat and pain.It was so F### close. had in 120 grit and was just trying to smooth out a couple of feather edges. All because some F### thought it would be a great F### idea to get a F### sunroof. Still have the passenger side quarter and outside and inside door to prep, passenger side jambs, spoilers to 120 and 180, boot to prep. Somehow fix the F### roof. Then primer, then wait enough time for the primer to cure, sand it all, reprimer the breakthroughs that will come from sanding, sand again, paint, all while the decent weather is still here. Then put it all back together. F### ridiculous, this shit is just never gonna end.

Worth mentioning that the roof is of course doubleskinned, so you can't get a hammer or dolly to it. Plus, all of the interior is already installed, so would be painful to have to pull it all out again, including the headliner and try and install it again without damaging / scratching etc.

I think that the image below shows exactly how my day goes on the Camaro.

Note how it starts off with thought, precision tools and a general goal of excellence.

We stick with said ambition and goal, then the results show for themselves:

Thanks for the encouragement, it all helps! What's up with your back, too many years of this type of work? Ye, i'm trying to not get caught up in details, i did find though that having not paid attention to the details, bit me in the ass, hence i'm redoing everything :( That's where the moaning comes from ... i'm trying to do it justice, using all of the very helpful information that people have provided and it still goes wrong. That's why i bash my head against the wall... doing it in halves (what i thought was whole) didn't work. Doing it whole doesn't work. I agree, it must be kinda annoying reading all these hiccups that i moan about and that's just it where it comes from... having the ability to do something and still f*cking it up... that's just crappy, hence the moaning :(

i slipped a disc when i was about 18 and the NHS misdiagnosed it as lumbago, 18 years further on after lifting engines and gearboxes thinking i was just a pussy and telling myself to "man up" i could bear it no longer and had an MRI, that was 9 years ago and showed 3 crumbled discs, 2 slipped discs , osteo arthritis etc.etc. So the surgeons won't operate due to the severity and amount of damage i have claiming im so fecked they wouldnt know which bit to operate on. i was in the middle of rebuilding my 3rd gen at the time.
Such is life though, been through the painkiller routine and now just have to suffer whatever it throws at me !

I did the "man it up" on my left knee, but finally gave up and had it looked at. Unpronounceable diagnosis, but the cure is easy, stop getting out of my patrol car by putting my left leg on the ground and hauling myself, and about 80 pounds of assorted equipment, out using just that leg.
Nice theory, but when the idiot jumps out of his car and starts running, or shooting at you, I'm out of that car in a heartbeat, pain or not.
Time to say "thanks for all the fish", and retire
