Have you got auto or manual transmission ?
If it´s an auto I´m thinking the surging might be coming from there.

29 years, you might be looking at a complete top end rebuild.
I´d be itching to see my piston tops and combustion chambers if it were mine.

When I got my Camaro with the 305 it was 7 years old, the heads
and motor valley were completely crudded up.....disgusting.
Cost me a home vacuum cleaner to get it all out.
I have all the service receipts from the American woman who imported it into England,
but the guy who bought it off her did´nt look after it.

It's a manual, took a vid of it running, will post it up as that may help a bit.

Thinking the intake gasket is on its way out based on the coolant leak, so maybe that's related too. I have been running premium fuel the last week to ensure maximum burn and also put some red line fuel additive in, but seems to be just the same. Very off. Wonder if it's maybe even sensor related

Saw a video of someone cleaning an intake - with a blowtorch! Seemed to be very fiery!!

If there is a coolant leak maybe you have a vacuum leak too plus an oil leak into the cylinders
from the inlet manifold bolt holes.
More than enough to give your car the hiccups.

I go round my intake bolts regularly and give them a tweak, two or three are always a little loose.
I´d like them to be longer in the thread, to make sure they go right through with the sealer applied.
On one side of my manifold I installed studs, they stay put so that´s six holes less to worry about.

BTW, when you do install new intake gaskets use FelPro, usually thicker than stock.

Waaay back in the depths of dark history I had a 1.8 HC Viva, automatic.

If there was a cooling system glitch, not enough or an air lock it´d run bad.

Maybe you have to sort that coolant leak before moving on.

Intake gaskets, one of the easiest jobs.

I hope so - is it a case of removing all the dizzy, fuel rail etc, or can you get away with keep those intact and the intake just high enough to remove the old gasket, clean it up and install the new one? I need to upload the pics from my phone. There are no visible leaks around the side, but perhaps that's because the exhaust heat is drying that area. Notice it on the front, thought it maybe to do with a sensor connection or along those lines.

No short cuts, it´s best to get the manifold right off and clean both mating surfaces, heads and manifold.
You´ll need to clean the block ends where the manifold sits.
There might be a lot of crap under there.
Remember to place number 1 piston at top dead center before you start, makes replacing the distributor a whole lot easier.

Lol, thought so. Not a quick job then. Good tip on cylinder 1 @ TDC! I think this is now the least favourite, bumping valve stems seals up towards the 'easier' list of jobs

I miss the days when "working on my car" meant messing with the eq on the stereo and deciding on 1 or 2 coats of wax.

Thanks for the advice on the intake gasket. Arrived on Friday along with the front steering bits. Going to take a few days at some point to sort out the gasket and and valve stem seals.

It's running better since changing out the ignition bits, seems to have more 'fire' and not struggle at idle. Think that once the valve stem seals are replaced and the intake gasket sorted, should take care of the idle being a bit up and down.
