Good article on mpg's Malc. It's quite true about the gas pedal and braking, plus a low rear end ratio. I tend to drive quite sensible now (see the below paragraph for reasoning). I tend to go about 65 on the motorway now as it sits right on 1,500 rpm. I used to do the speed limit +tax, so it was revving around 2,000 / a touch over, and it was a bit more noticable on the consumption. So now i cruise more and let off the gas earlier when coming to lights / roundabouts etc - the 3rd gen being a tad heavier than the clio, tends to coast quite a bit further with your foot off the gas as you decelerate. I may have heard incorrectly, but from what i've understood, on fuel injection cars, when you take your foot off the gas, decelerating with the engine in gear, there's no need for fuel as the momentum from the wheels to the engine keeps the engine turning, therefore fuel is not being used. Correct / incorrect? Please correct me if wrong.
I'll give some background... It's my daily driver so i'm trying to see what difference it is going from a 1.2l to a 5.0 litre. In the process, trying to help demystify the gas guzzler thing. I hear a lot of people 'switching to something more economical' when they already own a decent newish car, albeit with a bigger / sports engine. I used to get anywhere between 34 and 48 mpg's in the clio. It had a built in mpg in the gauge cluster so that was helpful
I also am very lucky in that i have a fuel card from work, so that's another reason for this type of research - i don't want my fuel card numbers sticking out like a sore thumb when it comes to an audit, due to it being a larger displacement engine. Before the fuel card sounds too good / as free fuel so why care - you still have to pay taxes etc as it's a 'benefit in kind' so i'm still trying to be sensible. I have to keep all the receipts and log the mileage (hence the odometer issue being a bad thing), hence already having these numbers, thought i'd share the findings along the way and get some facts and figures behind the gas guzzler thing. If those calculations in the screenshot are correct, seems to be better than expected! I was expecting 15 to low 20's. It's actually not too far off the clio (when it was on a bad day), much more enjoyable of course and that's where that article comes into play - i'd rather be paying a few quid more for a top up, than driving the clio any longer
I definitely care less about mpg's when it comes to the Camaro and it's 350 carb - it's only for weekend fun that car. The 3rd gen being the daily though, trying to be sensible while enjoying a v8 rumble and thinking about the longevity of enjoying it for years to come (thinking further into the future, don't want to give a future mrs. a reason to say 'get something that doesnt cost so much on fuel'
Of course, i do manage to find the odd occasion where i need to step on it
