I work in a motor factors. I can't see the government passing a law that basically says that everything we sell (because it's aftermarket not OE) will not be able to be fitted to a car. Think of how many people would be out of a job? Sales people and the people who actually make the parts. How many businesses will close as a result? All the parts that are exported and the tax that the government rakes in from it.

I agree with Nige that it could happen. However if it does then the powers that be will have shot themselves in the foot. Who knows maybe they really are that dumb.

Lots of people have classics for fun, if they can't use them they won't buy a new car to replace them. So less petrol bought and less road tax paid, gov loses out again.

Will be interesting to see the outcome.

@ChevyStu - that was a very well worded message, please let us know if there are any responses.

I agree with all of the stuff said so far- in a nutshell; it's ludacris because most of us are making our cars safer. If you have a tri-chevy tank with all round drum brakes and it's illegal to upgrade to safer discs, to help stop you, that is beyooond stupidity. ChevyStu said it well re: making the car more predicatable. With modification yes, the risk is that you could be a numpty and do things incorrectly and have a dangerous car because most of the bolts are loose and none of the welds have penetrated, but this is not the way to solve that, as that is a 1 in a 1000 case. And they could maybe solve that by having a decent education system where they actually teach useful stuff. Sorry, bit of a rant there.

All in all i mostly disagree with this legislation not just because of the small sightedness it represents, but something that i've not seen come up yet - infringement on human rights. I will need to read up properly on it, but i am pretty sure that this steps on our freedom as humans to express and enjoy a lifestyle we choose. I don't know about the rest of the car owners, but to me this is the lifestyle i enjoy and this is an infringement upon that. I am not into football, or getting hammered every weekend, or boating etc etc, to me, car culture is life and that's how i've always been and that's how i envision enjoying life. Owning a V8 the way i want it to look (within reasonable safety of course) is my lifestyle and that is how i want to live. I want to go to meets and share my born passion with others to enjoy my life. I don't want to be at football matches on a sunday, i don't want to be listening to shite club mixes of lady gaga on friday night, i want to be around cars, appreciating their designs, the creative outlets of what others can do with modified designs, listening to different exhaust sounds, feeling the ground shake as v8's with open headers rumble past. Denying me that right is an infringement on my human rights.

Sorry, as you can tell, to me it's not just owning the car, but the lifestyle and culture that comes with it, so i feel very strongly about it. It is a way of life, and then some (the business owners who rely on creating parts, selling, distribution, tuning, maintenance etc).

I'm pretty sure we don't live in a communist state - where we are told what to do, when, how and have no right to speak up, or do we?

There's quite alot of in depth conversation on Pistonheads that I've glanced through, and the general thoughts there are, that most of these changes would be open to interpretation and have to be worked in with our existing MOT requirements so in reality wouldn't change much. Also the vehicle modification industry in this country is just worth too much to be brushed under the carpet and disappear overnight.

hope we can all help

hi all my job is restoring and painting classic cars for a campany cald classic and sports car and when we finish these cars we quite often have to drive them back witch is about 14miles from our work shop and i can honestly say ive not driven one car that drives nice the brakes and handling are shoking the worst one i drove was a morris minor with a 4cylinder flat head in it was a totaly std car not been restored but tidy and on the run back i had to brake hard for a car that puld out in front of me the brakes didnt work and when they did start to work it rived me so hard left i nearly hit the kirb and then the drivers side rear brake locked up an i thort std brakes on old cars should be baned because i shit my self when this happend and what if i had gone up the kirb and hit someone am not saying all old car brakes are the same but 90% of the 1s i drive are an ive drove anything from old minis to jags and bentlys ma point is these old brakes steering ect ect arnt safe bit of a long story i know but this my opinion

Weirdly enough 1st & 2nd gen Camaros drove way nicer as standard than their Uk equivalents like Capris etc... Older 50's British cars were really dangerous, and I remember horror stories from my parents about their old Morris Minors, A35's and similar...

If anybody doubts this can happen just remember what happened to fox hunting,a traditional pastime with lots of rich and respectable supporters-now an illegal activity.
Also pistol shooting and ownership banned/illegal, so farcical that our Olympic shooters have to train abroad,what a joke and they call it a 'free country'.
