I have not seen your other posts, but I did see your rant about MOT testers. I can very easily explain why you might see red indicators - read my previous post about human fallibility and so-called 'sympathetic' testers. It's just that simple, so get YOUR facts right. I was talking with an MOT examiner today (the guys who check testers) and he agreed with my view on this.
The regs for indicators are simple and clear: anything post 1965 must have amber indicators front and rear. I can understand that the problem with Luke's car seems minor to some and maybe the tester is being picky, but how about this for a concept: Imagine spending a little time on your beloved car before the MOT test, checking and fixing any problems so that on the MOT, the tester is pleased to find nothing wrong. Yes, just make you car so it can pass the (very low) standards of the MOT test instead of complaining about MOT testers and/or the 'system'. This is NOT a dig at Luke by the way, who I believe is just trying to find a solution which I hope he does. :thumbup:

Hi Luke at a guess you can get access to the back of your rear light lenses (inside ) have you thought abought covering the red part of the lense with sticky foil tape ? from the outside they would look red and not let any light pass through, hope this helps Cheers Neil :thumbup: P.S. iff you have any trouble getting the tape PM me

It's virtually impossible to get into the rear lens as it's moulded from I piece I think, so the only opening is the size of the bulb. :(

not being funny but cant you just take your business else where then regarding this light issue? or point out to them that they have passed this car in previous years and the lighting arrangement has not changed before or since.

definitely dont want to go down the route I have seen with some yankie motors of adding horrible mini indicators to the bumpers etc which is just wrong.

Problem with that is that each time he tries a different MOT station, another £50 or so goes. Telling them it passed in previous years probably won't work either, they can say it wasn't happening before, or the tester who passed it has left, or the fact that it has passed previously when it shouldn't doesn't mean the mistake can be ignored now. But he can try anyway, they might be OK with it.
I agree the looks of some cars can be spoiled by some conversions but I would rather have my car legal and drivable than be a law-breaking rebel who is always looking over my shoulder and waiting for the blue lights........ :o
I'm sure this problem can be resolved with a little perseverance, good luck! :thumbup:

Hi Luke
I always use Formula one Auto centre in Wigston (I know you are local) and the guys seem really fair with the Camaro.

You can take the rear light units apart , i have just done this on the 77 Camaro (Bumblebee) due to a crazed lense.
Its a bit tricky and you need to go careful on the bolts that hold the lenses to the housings.

Get in touch if you want to have a look at a unit stripped down as i still have the old units.

Dear Martin Apologies, sorry my rant upset you,just as your "see folk like me everyday" has me! In 1965 when for type approval amber indicators and front seat belts became compulsory on all vehicles produced in the UK ! I was 15years old at that time, and spent many hours under the ramp watching my father (deceased) doin mot,s !! I am well aware of the type you refer to so please refrain from including me in that section! Looking recently at the gov mot web site it would appear to me I was wrong about the grey area from 65 (no mention of imports then)It was cleared up regarding IMPORTS in 86 in the clause D up there on the site! Ime not lookin for the last word onit though as it was my rant about ever increasing red tape n bullshit overiding common sense, reality and safety being sold as saving the planet! The most dangerous thing about most cars is sat behind the wheel !! Ime sure you'le agree. Cheers Steve

many thanks for all the replys and idea's. I tried most of them but the only one that worked was my first original idea. Which was taking the light unit a part and puting in Aliminium strips to block of the indicator / reverse section off. I think it has improved it by around 60-70%, in day light you cant see anything. But in a garage or when it's dark you can still see abit of light passing through into the rear light section.
The good news is today it has passed it's MOT, so very pleased to be back on the road again :D
The only reason i still use this garage is that it's only 5mins from my home, so i drop the car off and walk home and can still get to work on time.

Well done Luke! Some testers will pass a less-than-perfect fix on a car 'cos they can see the owner is at least trying to do the right thing. Anyway, you're sorted for now, but it's interesting to see that there has just been an article in the latest MOT news, highlighting the fact that many MOT testers have been passing red indicators when they should not. Should upset some American car owners when they turn up expecting a pass for red indicators only to fail....... :o
