As a bit of an update as I see this question has had a lot of viewers, and just to say thanks for the help which would not have happened without the forum. I went to see Silver Back's shop in Chelmsford. Wow! some top projects being worked on and got the chance to have a tour of all his current jobs. You wouldn't think that it would be possible to do some of the stuff going on in there. These guys churn out some amazing work and in the short time i was there you could really see the progress. Not just american stuff either, as I also spotted an old Triumph Spitfire and a Rolls Royce being turned in to a van!!
I think it answers the water-based question too as he mixes all his own colours and can also legally paint with 2k etc as he is a qualified restorer.

I got loads of helpful advice and it was a really friendly atmosphere. Defo worth a visit to anyone who needs any bodywork!!

Hi Everybody

Gavin from the Paint Shop Pros here. Just to let you know that we are very nearly ready to offer a spray booth for hire facility. In November last year I bought a unique mobile spray booth and have been busy kitting it out. I was hoping to be ready for January 2012 but the DVLA have requested that the vehicle undergo an inspection with VOSA as the previous owner modified the chassis. Hopefully this inspection will take place next week. If it passes then we can offer an at home spray booth hire service (if you have a large driveway).
If it fails then I have lost a lot of money!!! although I will still be offering it for hire but only onsite (Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire) until I can recoup enough to investment to mount it on a new chassis.

Since November I have been investigating how to make spraying a car easier for the less experienced this has lead me to test spray technologies and I have equipped the van accordingly. Rather than using a compressor driven system I have opted for a proper industrial HVLP unit which I have tested and tuned for automotive spraying.
by eliminating a number of variables and the contaminants associated with compressor based system the industrial HVLP system provides the following benefits to help achieve the great spray finish on your car finish that you require:
  • No mosture or oil in the air line to contaminate the finish
  • Warmed air to promote curing
  • No variation in air pressure - Less adaptive skills required - continuous uniform spray atomisation
  • 80-90% material transfer - massively reducing overspray - reducing air borne contaminate movement - reduced material costs

As some of you have already visited my site and have shown an interest in this service I will aim to keep you posted on progress. meanwhile feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
regards
Gavin

***Update*** we are now operational.
