Wow being caught out for insurance cover by someone else's pics at a show is pretty unlikely, but obviously possible. Who's pics were they, someone from the broker or company or just random ones online.. ?

Always state the mods for insurance, often doesn't cost much more, but can complicate who it's underwritten by. I've had to change mine this year 2 months into the policy purely cos the existing company would cover it with roll cage, no additional cost to switch to a new insurer with the same broker, just a pain..

crazy, this is the 2nd case i've heard of this. Either undercover coppers or insurance people find out about the event and then go and take pics. to be fair, if i was in their shoes, i would do the same, what better place to catch people that have non standard cars. not that i agree with it. it's terrible that they do this. big brother is definitely watching :( i don't want to know what's next, this is bad enough. talking about snitching

Agree with chevy-stu. Do tell insurers what you have done. You don't want any subsequent claim declined.

A specialist broker can be very helpful with this. I had a quote from one insurer and when I went to put it on cover I mentioned the magnaflow cat-back and they refused cover. A broker sorted out the cover elsewhere in no time at about the same figure.

And - look around again at renewal, you never know who might be quoting better rates.

And - I'm sure there are people on this site that can help with where to try.

HI guys my mate told me he phoned his sons insurance (as if it was his car ) and the company Directline, said that most insurance companys do the same (have people going to shows for this purpose ,to take pics )to catch people out they quoted him an extra 450+ and he is 26 .,the insurance said it was the exhaust that they were most concerned about (this was on the car when he bought it )but the insurance said it wasnt standard ,so should have been told (so the exhaust makes his car megga fast ?) dont think so.I totally agree you should tell them abought all mods to be fully covered. But at the end of the day i think it is more abought sqeezing more money out of you  Cheers Neil

Just consider what happens if it happened that he was involved in a smash somewhere (and I hope it doesn't).
The insurance collects the car and sees it's not what's on the paperwork. They'll wash their hands of it - he's now uninsured - and I suspect he'd have problems getting a sensible quote for the foreseeable future. So if it was his fault, suddenly the person who's car he's hit is left high and dry with a now uninsured driver that's driven into them. Put yourself in their shoes for a moment, could be your rod they've hit. Getting someone round a show with a camera is sneaky yes, but I can kind of see their point. I know some companies also check on forums etc. for modded cars.
Just 'fess up on the application!

Agreed, should mention your mods - but then don't charge SOOO much more. £450 extra for an exhaust? got to be kidding. Should be something that says certain mods are "free" to add on i.e any thing that is the the back box back (hope that makes sense!) is ok, same size wheels and tyres as standard but in alloy / chrome etc should be free. you get the idea? then it works on a scaled basis i.e high flow cat and back box (now you're talking performance enhancing - not much of course but let's face it, upgrading the back box will do bugger all differnece on most cars)would then be say 5% of the value of the car / insurance. lowered suspension would also fall into the category, then chucking in an engine twice the size would be 20% of value etc. I really think the government need to step in and make it fair. i don't think anyone has a problem declaring mods - it's the fact that pruice you have to pay is too high for what it is. i got a quote for a K&n induction kit on the insurance - raised it by 10% - If only it would give the 10% extra power then maybe we have a deal. it is just money scamming :(

Same thing applies to competitions!

I noticed that a couple of the modern road going Porsche GT2 and GT3 cars competing in this year's Manx Classic had their number plates taped over!!

Looks like maybe it's time to buy show plates :)
