Obviously it depends on how you define "inappropriate", but any car that has lets say a rack & pinion steering fitted, as opposed to a steering box could be deemed to have been "modified". The same I would assume could be said of aftermarket brakes & suspension mods.

Could this be a pre cursor to the possibility of much stricter MOT's that have been mentioned as possibly coming into force??

I'd have hoped that inappropriate would mean repair with a lesser grade part or item. Surely if you modify the braking system to be better, the steering to be sharper etc, then in essence you are modifying the car to be safer (unless you drive it like a dick, but that would be user error and not due to the modifications that have been made)

That's assuming you think the person looking, or making the rules knows what they are doing. I'd be worried that even though most mods are actually upgrades making the car safer through better braking, handling, body strength etc that because they will be perceived as the opposite due to not being 'factory' original..

For those that may be interested in trackday tyres, the rules for those are changing soon too, making lots of popular rubber like the Toyo R888 illegal due to more silly rules..

Been speaking to alot of MOT testers about these things and one replied with this

"according to VOSA, on the VSI (vehicle specific info.) all 3rd gens from 1986 on had ABS as standard and should fail if it is not fitted
lucky some of the more anal testers dont realise that"

I haven't had a chance to read through all the links properly but the whole thing makes me :evil:

It's so contradictory... i.e only use newly manufactured OEM style direct replacement parts. THEN it says it must be this way to keep the historic significance. well, why not use NOS (new old stock).

At the end of it, museums are there to preserve things. these aren't historic relics... they're cars! an individual owns it. we own them to express ourselves, otherwise we would buy a ford focus instead (sorry if anyone has a focus!!!!, just trying to paint a picture). If we want to slam it to the blacktop with hydraulics, then that is our choice to make.

My other thought is that surely it's safer to use better brakes, better tyres etc. 40 + years of auto technology means there are far better, more efficient parts out there. why are we then being forced to keep drums all round and have to try and fit in with modern cars that have better brakes. that's a safety issue too right there, surely that's what comes first.

And finally, what about all the companies and people that will be put out of work? People that make a living through upgraded direct replacement parts, custom shops etc.

It's not thought through at all and is the biggest pile of shite next to the congestion charge, i mean the emission charge, ye, they can't even make their minds up on what that's for.

Rant over :)

Let's go punch some people that came up with this "law".

i mean if i have trouble sometimes with NPD trying to identify and get an exact part for an exact model - when these guys are the experts... how is the MOT guy gonna have a clue! on that note, about a year ago i asked if he'd MOT a yank, he asked what it was so i said Camaro - his response - what's that? enough said.

I guess that kind works in our favour though?

More food for thought - what if that part isn't reporduced yet but NOS has run out. Had that with the '79 on a couple of things so it must be the case for all cars - there are simply some stuff you just can't get that's "factory".

I wish this whole thing was just a big joke - because that's how its coming across :(
