That's probably because it's at government level at the moment. The only probable reason that this information has come to light is because of the work ACE are doing monitoring the Government & EU policies that are being pushed through. ACE are then trying to make the information available to the motoring public to forwarn them. Unfortunately, a lot of it has fallen on deaf ears, as people think that it'll never happen & won't affect them.

I think we are going to have to keep an eye on this but alot of mods you are still able to do so don't think it will be too bad. Its going to be the historic and modern cars that are going to be hit the hardest. I have some contacts in the EU so going to see how some of them get round the modding laws. Alot of the mods we do are undetectable anyway

That's what I was thinking. If the car's already in this country and on the road, many cars will be 'technically' illegal as they're over the current accumulated points system, so unless you get a real MOT jobsworth, most will be OK.... (unless they introduce the FIVA recommendation... )

Yeah, that's what I implied earlier on in one of my posts, the tester has to find & fail it first. As we know, there are an awful lot of illegal cars out there now that don't comply to the 8 point system & are on the road. The problem is, if the tougher laws do get passed, which is likely, they become retrospective, so what's ok or borderline now might not be in the future. As to the real "jobsworth MOT tester", some people have said that they "know" a friendly MOT inspector, so they'll be fine as their cars will pass even if it is outside the 8 points. The give away of course is that some of the modifications are blatant. You got huge tyres in the rear?? then somethings been altered. You got rear coilovers or tubular A arms on a 40 year old car, somethings been altered. You got a part/full frame chassis?? somethings been altered etc etc etc. It's not really hard to spot these things is it??

The worry of this is that if that vehicle has an accident, or even worse kills somebody, the insurance would be void & they won't pay out. The insurance companies are constantly looking for ways to not have to pay out on claims. It only takes an insurance engineer to realise that something's wrong & you're in the poop. Also it'll affect the price & saleablility of cars, as no-ones gonna want to touch them if they don't comply. Would any of you buy a car for good money, knowing that it doesn't comply?? I doubt it very much.

I think we all owe you a debt of gratitude for the work you have done here

But what action can we as Classic Car owners do to help the situation?
Is there a (say) standard letter we could all send our MPs?

Of course the alternative is for everyone to come a live here on IOM - we would be delighted to welcome classic car owners as we have different rules (Historic VED of £10 applies to cars regd before 1987 for eg) and are not part of the EU!

They are the only motoring body that is working on behalf of the "modified" car scene in this country.

The way things are going in this country the IOM seems like a very good idea to be honest

I believe http://www.the-ace.org.uk/ do have a standard letter that you can send to your local MP somewhere on the site.
Moving to IOM is certainly a very appealing idea

I should also mention that we have no speed limits on open sections of the roads!

Disadvantage is that it is sometimes difficult to get on and off - for eg all the ferries are booked solid during TT practice and race week 30-May-10 June!! Although I have managed to get on a ferry on 7 June by poor chance
