Great, motorists screwed over yet again. Hard to believe we are a car nation, better get my Camaro on the road this year so that I can have a few months enjoyment, before it's branded illegal

Erm alot of the things dont really make sense, I may be a bit tired reading this but does this even affect cars around the 1980's for example? If this applies to any year I know only a handfull of Yank cars that are standard. I know hundreds of cars is the EU that are modified so they must have found a loophole?

Hi Rocky, this will apply to ALL cars. Up to now the laws haven't really been stringently enforced, but the possibility is that come 2012 they will. If the new style "super MOT" goes ahead then it's possible that it will have a section for the tester to complete asking if the car is original or modified. If modified & it falls outside the 8 point system, then it will need to go for a BIVA test. American cars can't pass BIVA as the glass doesn't meet current EU spec.

cheers...Nige

Ok thanks Nige. Will have to keep an eye on this. If its too strict I may end up moving to Cali sooner than wanted and taking my cars with me.

Hi Rocky, are you able to get into the US?? I looked into this a while ago & their borders have closed since 911. The only way to get into the US on a permanent basis ie emigrate there, was to either buy a business out there & employ X amount of Americans whilst keeping the business strictly in profit for so many years, or to have a job that the Americans can't do. The you'd then have to train X amount of Americans to do your job as part of being accepted into the country. Someone I know married an American girl & even he's having trouble getting a VISA & being allowed to stay there. It's all gone very tits up from a few years ago

cheers...Nige

I've got a friend who's emigrating with his wife and 2 kids to California soon. They're hoping to do some kind of investment into a syndicate thing where the money gets puts into a pot to fund employment of 2 Americans (I assume to offset 2 immigrants taking jobs).. Luckily they have a big house in Surrey to sell to fund it all..

yeah we know some loopholes, as my family has been going out there alot over the years we have seen alot of ways of doing it. We know alot of people and traders in Cali and I have family in Detroit.
You can buy in to a business which is the easiest way but obviously more risky. just because you paid for it doesnt mean they will renew your Visa, I have seen people kicked back out and lost everything.
If you have money you can stay out there for so long then come back and go out again but you cannot work out there.
My uncle missed the time when they just let people sign up to stay but that was a long time ago and he kicks himself ever since.

here's a link to the possible introduction of the new MOT for 2012, outlining some of the things that may be included

Ive spoken to alot of people in the trade over this including MOT testers and no one has heard about it yet.
My dad and uncle said they tried to bring something in similar in the 80's due to main dealers wanted the change. but it never did but then we wernt in the EU then.
