Well blew £100 on a new battery and it still wont start, still just a click of the solenoid as before.

Now I'm not a mechanic type - but is the new battery fully charged - they sometimes need a charge having stood on a shelf for a while. T'other thought - is the battery earthed to the chassis well?

The sort of problems I've heard about anyway.

I'd check all the wiring from the battery, to the starter/solenoid, and from the alternator in case you've got a short. Mine once burned itself out on the exhaust and was erratic like you describe, as the positive wire was shorting out.
Failing that, maybe you had a bad replacement starter when you fitted the new one ?

Well I'm thinking faulty starter now. Both old and new battery are fully charged. Started with new battery a few times then click only. I think ill ring real steel tomorrow about the starter.

Silly i know, but are you sure ALL the battery cables/engine earths are tight?
Also, have you relocated the battery?, the reason i ask is, if you have, thereis the possibility that the cables used simply cant handle the current.(unlikely given the symptoms you describe, but possible)

Starter may be the problem - your check may sort that out though.

Poor earths and the like can be very random and very very irritating as she will work sometimes and not others. Hopefully you are sorted by now, but if not check the earth strap. Seems odd she has started occasionally and failed occasionally.

Good Luck, nothing worse than a mystery when you all you want to do is drive.

Ye baffled about the intermittent nature of your issue. It does seem strange that it always starts with the charger plugged in. Or was that just lucky coincidence?

Where possible, a photo sharing service can be used such as Flickr, Imgur etc. The image location (usually ending in .jpg) can be copy and pasted between the ][ brackets that appear when you click the 'Img' button (you can find this button at the top of the message box).

How to post youtube vids: Click on the 'youtubeHD' button at the top of the message box and in the middle of the ][ brackets that just appeared, copy and paste everything from the youtube web address that appears after the = sign i.e if this is the url: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2cNqaPSHv0 just copy "K2cNqaPSHv0").

Sorry to hear that a new battery did not solve your problem. Is the battery in the factory location?
