Well since yesterday was a wash out around here I decided to take my boy for a spin in the Camaro today. Reasonable weather and the car ran great.

I'd seen on Google Maps that a BMW test track is very close to where I live and it looks totally awesome so I went to find it and see if I could have a go. Unfortuneately, all the roads around it are private so I ended up going for a coffee in a nearby restaurant and asked in there if they knew whether the track was open to the public, at least on certain days. The bad news was, no, it's not open to the public so that was it. If you search Google Maps for "Speichersee" you'll see what I mean. :twisted:

I am a bit worried about the oil pressure when it's idling. Does this look a bit low to you ? It's fine when it's under a bit of load but what's the best way to increase pressure ? Perhaps one of those tray things that reside in the oil sump or just leave it because it's normal ?

The car's looking good :D . The oil pressure is ok at that for tick over (approx 20psi) So long as it rises once the car's being driven it should be fine. Wouldn't harm though to freshen up the oil & fit a new filter hth Cheers.......Nige

Cheers Nige. I didn't realise you could see the state of the oil from those photos though :shock: You must have awesome vision - I'll change the oil and filter this weekend even though it's only done 1000 miles since the last change in October. :lol:

Didn't I tell you I was telepathetic?? :lol: :lol: to be honest a 1000 miles isn't a great deal of mileage, so probably wouldn't need an oil change unless it's been standing around unused for any length of time hth, cheers.....Nige

Just out of curiosity, what grade of oil does everyone use ? I suppose it varies between the older and newer models but in my 3rd Firebird I think I use something like a 10W30 which you don't see to often in Halfrauds.

I suspect someone has just stuck a 10W40 oil in my Camaro but saying that, I'd expect a thicker oil to remain at a higher pressure than a thinner oil, even when warm.

Does anyone have a service manual for car with the LT1 engine and can tell me what the recommended grade is ?

My husband says the recommended grade to use in the LT1 is 5w30

Thanks for that you 2. I think perhaps it also depends on your climate. A 5W would surely be better during cold/winter conditions. I'll go with a 10W30 though because I use an old banger for winter and that won't even get an oil change this year.

A magnetic sump plug would be a good idea too. Does anyone know whether you can buy them for the Camaro 4th gens ?

I might ask that bloke from Opie Oils to write a bit about the stuff on here. It was fascinating reading when I read his advice on a Subaru forum.

The husband here!!

My GM factory service manual for 1997 covers both the 3.8 Gen II V6 and the 5.7 LT1 V8.
It gives the recomended oil viscosity as:

3.8L 10w-30 (preferred), 5w-30 (optional)
5.7L 5w-30 (preferred), 10w-30 (optional)

It also states other grades are not recomended.

I have no idea why 5w is optional for one and preferred for the other. You pays your money and take your chances!!! :)
