Hey all,

I don't believe that I'm having another problem at xmas time, last year the coolant sensor went :cry:
Anyhow, I may have screwed something up when I got stuck in the snow today and I was spinning the wheels to get free, lost my temper :oops: I got free but the car made a god awful loud squealing noise and what sounded like something scraping I think from the rear! Noise went away after about 10 seconds and all seemed OK. Drove happily for about 150 miles when the noise returned, but intermittent, near the end of my journey, not sure if it was because I started going up a few hills! I'm now about 170 miles from home (Glasgow) at the worst possible time of year and no American car specialists up this way either. Kinda scared to drive it again in case I do further damage, but apart from that the car drives OK.
The noise kinda reminds me of a bus driving off!
Any ideas as to what may be the problem, may be nothing to do with the snow wheel spinning at all!!
I can't run a diagnostic either as my laptop and cable are back home in Aberdeen so I'm in a real pickle!

merry christmas dude,

cant believe your luck :(

only thing you could do at moment and withut getting too dirty, is jack it up and sping the rear wheels if you can. does it feel 'funny' like something is 'bad' inside the diff? And see it you can pull out wheel in and out.

does the rear feel like something is caught when driving but off the throttle, like brakes are on?

hope you get it sorted

Altho my noise happened at home briefly and then started again about 160 miles later and is intermittent.

Opinion on youtube seemed to be the bearings, if I keep driving the car is it likely to cause more damage and are the bearings expensive to replace?

is there definitly enough oil in your diff?

it could be either wheel end bearings, diff unit bearings or pinion bearing. you'd really need to get under it and take cover off etc to check.

wheel end bearings not so expensive, 10 seal 20 bearing, and whatever for fitting as does require axle shaft removal, or you could do yourself

diff unit ones, bearing about 30-40 each, you need a pair, plus diff needs to come out and bearings heated off i think, then pressed back on. more expensive for labour

pinon bearing is a nightmare, maybe it an be done in situ int he car, but maybe a rear end out job, more expensive.

second had rear maybe a good should but still dont know what you are getting, one on ebay for 300 which is ok, just needs swapping. i did mine myself on driveway.

i dont want anything worse to happen it is touch and go but if you drive the car ust take it steady with no shape accel or decel, ie wheels spin starts when tires suddently regain grip or full slamming anchors on. Unless you much do an emergency stop of course.

sorry for essay, hope this helps a bit? i know of tails of woes with the rears and also noises from new diffs so its swings and roundabouts really. my second had one is noisier than my old one which i inspected when removed and it was about 5 miles from losing all the gubbings inside the diff :O

Sorry to have wasted your time, I've had it confirmed that its the transmission, first and second gear are knacked!!!
There's one guy in Glasgow where I was and by luck I gave him a call and he offered to have a look and confirmed the gearbox needs to be rebuilt :x Expensive to do up here, but he will ship down to a guy in Chester who will do it for approx. £1000-£1500 :o man that really sucks!!

Thanks for your assistance anyway.

P.S. If anyone knows of where I could get it done cheaper plse let me know :)

think i can get a second hand box for you a bit cheaper, cut maple salvage in essex had one from a 99 V6 in so should be same. i wanted it but its different to my v8 trans.

what up then, no gears? not good

have a read of this too, see if it helps! No problem, you haven't wasted my time, hopefully you learned something abut diff for future reference :D

Hi Luke,

Anything to save money would be great :D

This is the story, car drives OK, first gear is really noisy, second gear is a bit noisy, third and fourth are OK.
Just noticed on the last day tho, that the car was juddering while sitting in first gear, that was a new development!
Couldn't see my exact problem on that website.
Yup, learned a lot about the rear diff and what it does.

I've left the car in Glasgow with that guy while he is on holiday, he'll get me a price to have the gearbox rebuilt when he gets back, but very pricey and then about £160 to have the car taken down to Chester. But if another box can be had then....

hum, strange why it would do that?? really without pulling gearbox sump and checking for 'bits' i dunno wha tit would be. other than the trans mound, and so everything is shaking about underneith

either way this is the guys with the v6

Cheers guys, looking into Maudys 1999 tranny at the mo as it should be newer and more compatible. Trying to find out how big a job it is locally and what it'll cost to swap them out!
