Hey all, me again. :?

I'm not sure if this is a problem or not, but I have to top the coolant up every couple of weeks.
Every time I check the coolant level with the long bendy 'dipstick' type thing, it shows as empty, but only needs about 700ml to fill it again! Doesn't seem to go below this level!
Thing is the engine temp shows normal (new coolant sensor a while back) and no warning lights show so wondered if anyone else has encountered this or is it normal?
Its a 1998 Camaro 3.8 auto.

sorry dude, no experience with V6 colant system to be honest.

Essentially a car should not be using nearly a litre of water over 2 weeks, unless there is a reason it is used or overflowing or leaking. I know we taked about stuff last time with coolant sensor problem and I dont think there is anything up with your car as it runs fine etc, ,no oil in water or water in oil etc etc so done worry, it prob a leak somewhere? Does the resevoir run fully out so there is NOTHING in it or just in COLD region so still has water in. Any drips under car, small leaks. Does the coolant pipe become fully hard/pressurized when running?

Hi,

It doesn't sound as if you have too much of a problem. It depends when you are checking the level.

I have attached a page from the manual. Hope you can read it, if you click on the image and then zoom it should be OK. Hope it helps.

Thanx for the replies guys.
I've been checking the level as per the instructions.
This is what I do, usually check when cold, but have done warm as well.
I remove the dipstick, dry it and insert it again, might be lucky to get a drop on the very end, but usually completely dry.
I then add my 700ml mix and check it again and it is at the level it is supposed to be at!
What I don't understand is why it never seems to lose more than that, regardless how long I leave it!
And the engine shows no signs of overheating either.
The coolant looks OK colourwise and the oil also looks OK.
I guess I'll have to get it checked out at the garage, very strange tho!!

OK, turns out the water pump is leaking and also the coolant temp sensor (only replaced this in Jan).
Seems to be a lot cheaper shipping from the US direct, anyone have any good suppliers?

I usually use ebay, but only if they are a company etc and check they will ship by emailing them. Paying by paypal means its a bit safer.

remember to add VAT and some import tax and postage here, (import + postage usually about £15, then VAT on top. Still cheaper
