The dyno is dyno dynamics. I'm not too sure on how the tuner's dyno is calibrated accurately. His tune on my car is what I call a safe tune. AFR 13.x from start up idle to 2.5K rpm then it fattens to 12.x to 11.7 all the way to 6K rpm. He showed me the chart and the highest I saw on the graph for timing is 27 at the top.

He builds LS engines and install TVS/Maggie systems/tune them for a living. That being said, it looks like he tuned my car as if I have a s/c.

As you all know the car is full exhaust, lid/LS6 intake/stock MAF w/ a screen/28.8lb inj (88% inj duty cycle @ 6K rpm), 243 heads, EPS cam 222/226 113 LSA.

He didn't get beyond 6K rpm or even extend the fuel cut off because his reasoning was I still have stock bottom and stock rod bolts. Fair enough but I do have upgrade valve springs (918s), upgraded stock rocker trunions and hardened pushrods which he completely disregard.

Overall, I'm just glad the car is tuned correctly not to optimum performance by any means but it is what it is.

Without further due...

They're pretty good figures, but you sound a little disappointed with the results, were you expecting more from it?? Are those figures corrected for engine horsepower or is it rear wheel?? How much torque is it putting out??

Just fitting the upgraded springs etc isn't gonna stop the bottom end letting loose if something went wrong, so he was obviously being sensible & keeping the revs to a safe limit @ 6000rpm, was the power still climbing at those revs, or was it starting to tail off ??

Dyno's can be fickle things, as the oprators, on a lot of dynos, are able to "fudge" the readings to make them look as if the engine's more powerful than it really is. It sounds like your man is giving you a true reading, which is what you want really.

People really put too much store in what the readings of a dyno say. If the car feels strong on the road, turns the numbers at the track & gives a good feeling whilst driving, then that'd be good enough for me. After all, you don't drive a dyno  , it's what the car's capable of in the "real world" that matters, not hp figures.

Strangely enough, I visited a local motor racing shop a few weeks ago & they're just fitting in their new Dastec dyno which will take up to 1200 hp & they've asked if they can "borrow" my '69 to set it up, as they figured it's gonna be about the biggest car they'd physically fit on there. They want to know where to fit the cooling fans for optimum performance to cool the cars. Dunno whether to take them up on the offer of a free dyno run or not as the "numbers" aren't that important to me, after all the car is what it is

cheers...Nige

nice runs dude, im presuming thats flywheel?? so your looking at about 420 at the rear wheels, which is nice. 100+ bhp over stock for heads and cam is a good return i think. You still need to get to the track and get into 11s :D

as for the tune was it a full WB set-up? I'm sure you have read a little into the tuning having HP tuneres right? Was it a full MAP VE tune and MAF tune or justs a Open Loop power run tune as you talk about commanded AFR wrt rpm. Also you have a newer car than mine and the 2000+ usually ran 13.6 afr to 2500 then ramped down to 12.6 but timing only runs from 15 to 19 deg at 6K. My 99 runs a commanded arf of 11.7 as soon as you are at WOT regardless of rpm (so yours is better that it ramps) but im running my timing upto about 28 deg as it isnt knocking so all seems good. My pals monaro (GTO) tune ona 2004 model runs a ramping afr from 14.6 to 13.3 from 2.5K to 6K but he has timing to ramp from 16 to 20 so its swings and roundabouts with tunning. With more fue you need more timing to compensate for burn time, less fueling means the max timing you can run is less.

good reads here:

i'd be happy with the numbers, but rather have a run down the strip. Least the car is safe so i'd be happy. Also if you do want to run more RPMs if your cam is still ramping power up then you need to do your rod bolts. Then it'll be safe to about 6500 but no further on stock rods.

Hey thanks for the response nige and maudy.

You are both right. I don't want to spin the motor to the moon but I know for sure this cam, its peak HP is at around 6300-6500 rpm. I think I'm safe @ 6600 fuel cutoff. I won't be spinning the motor too often on that area anyway it's not a racecar but I want to know that if I want to put the car past 6K rpm, the power is there.

The power were still climbing @ 6K rpm w/ only 88% inj duty cycle w/ 11.7 AFR. If I could get it lean a "tiny" bit also w/ timing adjustment I could squeeze another 20 rwhp.

I talked to the tuner and I'm going to get a retune to make it a little leaner at the top. He is okay with it as long as I don't try to blow up my motor. lol.

No doubt that I'm happy that car is in the safe tune but it bugs me that its not fully on its potential.

Maudy, the tune is full MAP/MAF tune.

Is santa pod close for this season? I know I'm not going to get a good ET w/ this suspension set up but I want to see the trap speed to know the power is there.

Pod should still be open:

http://www.santapod.co.uk/calendar.php

Yeah the tune seems like there is a bit more to be gained, dont know why it is so rich, like I say the stock 99 tune runs 11.7 at 28 deg. When its leaned up the timing will need to be pulled a bit. and also that my pals LS1 monaro runs 13.6 at 6K with only 19 deg of timing but gained 30 bhp from tune (stock engine with intake and true duals only) If its a full VE MAP and MAF calibration then im sure everything is self consistent and the rich arf isnt a fudge factor. But if the dude is doing a re tune then thats good :)

Car Details:No chevy at the mo :-(
Just caught up with this thread... and some nice figures there. I did not have the sound up at work but I make sure I hook up some headphones later.

I plan to get a run if I can within the next few weeks. Totally standard with no engine mods, so will be interesting to see what I get.
