 Post subject: Z28 Oil Pressure Mystery

Hi Everyone, This is my first post and I am looking for help. I have a 1995 Z28 with a standard LT1 engine. A few months back it started overheating in traffic but would cool back down on the move, I traced the fault to a blown fuse in the fan circuit, great, no!. I then found that with a hot engine at idle the oil pressure dropped into the red and the check gauges light came on. First thoughts were to change the oil and filter, no change, then I thought I may have cooked the sender unit so I put it into a garage to put a manual gauge on it. The manual gauge showed 2 - 4 lb of pressure at idle and was low all the way up when the engine is hot. Off came the sump to check the oil pump and pick up pipe both fine, the garage found some wear on the crank bearing shells and suggested that this would be the cure, I gave them the go ahead and then got the call, No Change!!!!. I am now running with 15w 40 and a drilled thermostat to keep the pressure up, but it still falls to nothing when the engine warms up, has anyone come across this before? or have any idea what I should look at next. got to ask the normal question but im sure you have had this check with the mechanic, but no water in oil, oil in water? the initial overheating may have warped the heads or blown the head gaskets

Does it leak oil around the air intake, or is there exsessive oil in the air intake, as this seals to the block

Also the pick up height of oil the oil supply in the sump may need checking ( i know you said it was check but was the height checked) if too high its out of oil, but if too low it will suck to the sump ifself not allowing oil in. The bearings is usuallly the solution to the problem so it should be cured with the work that has been done

Hi Thanks for the reply, oil is clear of water and vice versa, no check on the the air intake will look into that one, the mechanic didn't check the pick up height, is it a simple job? Thanks again for your help.

dunno how hard or not, sure the LT boys will chime in if they have done it or do a quick google, its a case of dropping the sump maybe and just seeing how long the pickup is and that its in the oil, but not touching the sump

hope you get it sorted, keep us informed how you go, good luck
