Thanks for the gauge link gen2Z28. Much better than dakota! Dakota ones only show the stats as numbers whereas the ones you mentioned actually show a graph or whatever it's called, it's late, i'm tired :)
What sort of price range do they sit in? Autogauge i'm looking at are about £450-£650. Birthday is coming up though... :)
Thanks for the tip on the paint too! I have toyed with the idea of a pearl type paint. Not sure whether to go with white or black stripes, really like your idea of making the stripes different like that, please do post some pics up when you can, bet it's gonna look great!

Car Details:1978 camaro z28- undergoing full restoration and custom work , impreza wrx, mach1 motorsport, hayabusa, k6 gixxer 1000 and a vectra cdti daily hack
Location:west midlands
bought the speedo and tacho (80mm), oil temp, oil pres, water temp, volt meter all in blue (52mm) for £360 delivered, have additional fuel gauge on order approx £50 delivered which i will be placing in a pillar pod mount with my idiot lights, did get these at trade price (-40%) as run an Alloy wheel company but sure i could pull some strings if you want some, will call my contact and pass on their name and number to you, gauges are also available in red. Linden

Hey Linden, that is pretty damn tempting, thanks for offering to help and pull some strings, i'd like to take the offer up if you don't mind?
Only difference to what you have is that i would only be after one of the oil gauges, and replace the other with a fuel gauge. really appreciate your help!!

alritey all,
time for a quick update!
Have taken a break from the garage to enjoy this gorgeous weather we are having :)
I cut out the dents from the sills aka rocker panel as no amount of dent pulling would do anything. Those are some tough sills! i think as they have folded in on themselves, it was a no go. I hand crafted some sheet metal to fit into its place, nearly there, few adjustments still (see pics).
Other than that, applied the last amount of rust remover to the body, cut out the weak/rotted parts so it's now ready for some sheet metal to patch it up. Have also been welding up the holes in the exhaust around the joints as they were welded whilst on the car... the top halves of the joins had a nice 1-2mm gap on them :shock:
Should be ordering paint on monday, think im going for viper red :)
Am hoping to have it in primer by the end of next weekend (writing off half of saturday for ace cafe).
Erm, oh yes, may have gauges sorted thanks to Linden, looking for some seat covers, can only find at classic industries in the states so possibly ordering from there soon.

Try NPD & see if it's any cheaper. Ask to speak to "JT" if you ring, he's very knowledgeable. Stuff normally turns up within a week. Thanks Nige!! they seem cheaper than classicindustries if i remember correctly. Great turnaround time too, then again, with that volcano in the way, i'm sure theres a backlog for air freight! Not to worry though, i just started to take one of the front seats apart and wow, covered in rust! every part of metal on those bad boys are hugged by rust. By the time i take them fully apart and let them soak in the rust bath the seat covers should get here :)
Couple of questions if you have the time....
1) is it posible to move this thread into the projects section and who's the best person to ask? I would do myself but i would imagine only an admin can do this?
2) Looking at painting soon, the plan is to block down with 320 grit the existing paint, then seal it, then paint with basecoat, however as the white stripe is painted, would the paint on this part be lighter? would i need to primer as opposed to putting don the red basecoat?

Hi Ray, thread now moved :thumbup: .

As you say, block down the paint, carry out all repairs & then seal. Then primer, followed by more blocking, then basecoat it. If you're basecoating it I assume that you decided to go metallic or pearl?? What colour is the car going?? If it's red, then some reds tend to "bleed" through whites & turn the white off colour. There are a couple of ways to avoid this, but I'd spray the area that the stripe is going on first in white & then mask out the stripes & spray on the red basecoat followed by laqcquer. :thumbup:

Thanks for confirming the basics of the process :) Sorry i apologise, i got my terminology mixed up, by basecoat i meant solid colour. It's going to be just 1 colour, viper red via ppg turbo range (2 pack). In terms of the stripe, as it already had a white stripe down the middle, i didn't want the chance of the primer being lighter in that section, leading to a lighter shade of red where the old stripe was. My plan is to vinyl new twin stripes, still cant decide on black or white, hence the vinyl :)
I have been told if sticking to the same colour, there's no need to primer, that's why i was after some clarity over the primer on the existing paint as just sealing it then painting would definately lead to a lighter shade of red. Hope that makes sense!

Still working on the repairs, got a couple of pics to put up still.

Ok, there's a few things to consider here, some painters feel that if you apply a white basecoat under a red then the red becomes more "vibrant or "brighter". The reasoning being that the white base will allow less coats of red to be applied to cover the primer & that the red will, in doing so appear lighter (hope that makes sense). eg if you spray a panel white & then apply 2 coats of red, the red will still be slightly transparent, allowing the white to "lighten" the paint. Add another 2 coats of paint & that red will then appear darker, as the red becomes less transluscent & full colour coverage is achieved.
As I say, some painters like to paint cars this way. Personally if i pick a colour i like, as in the Audi "Brilliant red" on mine, then I want it to look like that colour, not a slightly lighter colour of Audi "Brilliant red". Normally if a white base is applied & then a red over the top with just a couple of coats applied then it's nescessary to clear lacquer the whole lot to get enough coverage to flat back & polish.

The down side of this is that you don't have a true colour, but a lighter shade, which in the event of any damage becomes more awkward to colour match. I'm not one for spraying a white base to be honest, if you look at the pics of my car in primer, I had the primer tinted red. Although this takes on a slightly pinkish colour, the Audi red covered well & a full "true" colour was achieved after just 2 coats (although quite a few more coats followed) :lol:

if you're staying with a similar colour then you're correct in that you don't need to primer or seal the whole car (you shouldn't need to seal it if the paints been on there for a good while & that you don't break through into the paint beneath). You will however, as a precaution, need to seal any repairs or areas that "break through" into the layers of paint beneath. you must prime over the sealer though as the sealer doesn't offer good adhesion to colour coats. :thumbup:
