just got a new engine for my car, its a 5 litre 305 apparently out of a camaro with tpi which is what i need,
only thing ive noticed is that the rocker covers are held on by bolts in the middle rather than 4 round the edge, i take it they vary? obviously not a problem just interested why its different

Hey Matt !,
the engine that you speak of is a 1987 or newer v-8 You will have to get different parts for this engine than the older engine you had. the intake m manifold has 4 center bolts that are vertical ,
this requires a different manifold unless you have the correct one. the crankshaft has a one piece
rear main seal and it is smaller in diameter so you will require a different flywheel or flexplate dependant on what you bolt behind this engine. if you can get me the numbers off the rear engine flange above the filter area i might be able to get you a little more info !

thanks for the reply, are we talking about the injection manifold being different? it all looks like it will fit ive not got that far yet as ive been on another project. i was told it was running tpi obviously thats whats going back on it, i cant see evidence of a fuel pump on the engine which is good.

Ill have a look for some numbers over the weekend would be good to get some more info on it, i put the flex plate off the old engine on it which fits fine as far as i know but im learning as im going, the gearbox going on is a th350 thats almost finnished being re built.

lets take this peice by peice;
you spoke of valve covers having four bolts that go across the middle of the cover in opposed to the
type that have two on top and two on bottom (along the edges)
cylinder heads from as far back as the first chevy v-8"S have thier bolts around the perimeter 2 top
2 bottom. cylinder heads manufacterered after 1986 (87 and newer) have four bolts across the top center of the cover. should you have TPI manifolds on both engines then you are fine!
If your new engine has no manifold,you must be wary of the fact that the two center manifold bolts
go into the manifold then into the head just about vertical and the outer bolts go in the traditional
angle. the two bolts in the center of the head are vertical (both sides) if the engine in your car has the old style valve covers and the new engine is center bolts chances are the manifold is different in this area.
my 86 TPI has a fuel pump mounted in the tank and the simple use of a block off plate was used to
block off the old mechanical pump mounting provisions. Newer engines they no longer drilled out the provisions for the mechanical pump. perhaps this is the case when we speak of your car.
By the way whats your year make and model ? On the side where the oil filter is located on the flange that the transmission is bolted is a number
it looks like this 14093638 its cast into the block. I can tell better what kind of engine it is by this number.

right cool thanks for that ive got the rocker overs so no problem, mines a 3rd gen iroc ive had it a year but been hard to find parts.

the other project ive been doing is a alfa gtv for the mrs, i had to re build the engine as they like blowing up, but all sorted now, just finnished that now so back on to the camaro again.

this quote I belive tells me that you have taken the flexplate off the old engine and put it on the new engine???? if so the newer style heads are on an older style block. The new style engine (87 and newer) have a different crankshaft flange . so if this is so you have switched heads, if not then you need a flexplate that bolts to the new style engine crankshaft. you look tell me what you see ....remember get me numbers !!!!!
