Car Details:3rd Gen camaro Z28 5.7
Hi all. I acquired a 3rd gen Camaro last year and have just discovered this site. Randomly my car appears to be the one in the avatar for the 3rd gen section!

Its an 83 Camaro Z28 crossfire with a 5.7 engine fitted.

What are my options for more power?

Im thinking headers and exhaust system first. Then better cam and maybe ditch the crossfire and either put carb or TPI from a later one on.

What are the chances, that's a pretty cool coincidence!
I wonder if the previous owner was a member here.

Power wise you're on the right path - Headers and exhaust will make one of the biggest differences and is relatively easy. The TPI upgrade will likely make a bigger difference but is more difficult compared to headers. The 2 will be a good combo. I had a TPI and used it as a daily driver for over 2 years. Started everytime on the button whatever the weather, so i would go for TPI over carb. You get good MPG's too and don't need to worry much about tuning as it's self tuning. You can usually pick up the whole TPI setup from one that's being broken - maybe give Rocky at American Technique a shout, he may have one available.

After that, cam sounds like the next big upgrade and whilst there maybe switch over to roller rockers. Don't need to worry about oil types then as roller setups are much more versatile when it comes to using oil - hardly any oils these days have the zddp content required to keep a flat tappet cam from wiping out a lobe. They are out there, but whilst you're doing the cam swap, it's something that provides less worry in the long run.

A 350 3rd gen is quite a rarity, headers, exhaust, decent air intake, I'm sure you can get a performance chip for them.as well, if its a 750r4 box they do a performance valve replacement kit that lives up the box and shift points (made my 305 wheels squeal when it would change), i ended up adding chassis rails and a chain on the drivers side of the engine as the chassis would flex when I launched hard

Yep, quite surprised it's a 350 (5.7) if it's original.... didn't realise they ever came with the crossfire injection system either... (it is possible someone's transplanted an early C4 Corvette engine in there ?)

As above, decent exhaust/headers to start with, then cam, intake and then heads... at which point you may as well rebuild the engine.. !

I think the Trans AM GTA's came with 350's vs the regular Trans Am coming with a 305, so not sure how that would translate to Camaro's - the Z28 came with the 305, not sure which option would have come with a 350?

As Stu says, likely a transplant motor as the setup options were carb, tbi or tpi.

Rich is a top bloke, good to hear he's sorting you car out  I'm not sure about the chips i'm afraid, Rich will definitely know about that. From what i had read on U.S forums, you can burn a new PROM which is effectively how the chip gets remapped.
