Due to the cracks in the paint I decided to sand off the addtional and original paint. Sure enough there was plenty of thin veins/imperfections causing the cracks in the top coat.

Sanded back and ready for paint...

In this photo you can actually see where the original Z28 graphics have left an imprint. I suspect it was caused as the graphics shaded the urethane from U.V.

Although no recent posts, I've been reasonably busy (as much as disposable income allows ;) )

Decided it was about time to work on the underside of the car, fuel tank removed and in the process of removing the underseal (a lovely job :sick: ) in doing so there's some corrosion although thankfully no serious penetrative rust, just surface rust.

After a repetitive process (many hours :crazy: ) of mechanical abrasion, citric acid gel (home brewed) and washing the surface, and finally phosphating...

...the original G.M. underseal has done it's job well, although there had been a another application in it's years. Nevertheless it had begun to dry out thus the need to remove was apparent, corrosion successfully treated...

The exhaust system had to be removed with work to the underside, which gave me a chance to improve the look of the pipe work...

...some of the products I used for metal polishing, something I've not tried before but with pleasingly results (despite the ridiculous amount of hours involved)

...for anyone who hasn't tried the practice of metal polishing, I'd highly recommend it. Although a torquey pedestal grinder is the preferred choice, a decent low adjustable speed angle grinder will suffice :)

Thanks :thumbup: It's not perfect though, there are still very minuscule scratches (like very minor swirl marks) I did my best to eradicate them but I found the metal too soft to allow a an absolute scratch free finish, it is mild steel though. It was more or less just an experiment and to learn a new skill, I'm well aware the mild steel will corrode despite it's highly polished finish. Happy how it turned out though :)

For the base coat for the underside I decided upon an epoxy mastic as opposed to the likes of POR 15 based on the it being more durable and greater longevity, not to mention this epoxy mastic being far more resistant to corrosion. Very similar (or possibly identical to Rustbuster's 121, but far cheaper) this is Jotun 87 Aluminium, mixed by weight...

I meant to say, very impressed with how well the exhaust came up, never would have imagined they could be cleaned up to even half that extent, good job!

Good to know the underneath is sorted now, that will definitely help it last a long while. Were the frame connectors on the car already? Looks like they would have been quite easy to fabricate.
