I wouldnt class it as high mileage its a fairly stress free engine and for the age of the car 119k is nothing if you look at some of the mileage these have in the states they have over double that and still going

End of the day its all down to what condition the engine is in for example my sister has a astra with 64k on the clock and the engine is knackered burns oil for fun 245 miles to the pint and my dad has a astra same engine but has 163k on it and hardly uses oil

It's got a lot of history that came with it, service history looks to be good, it sailed through it's MOT without any advisories so fingers crossed

Congrats on the first purchase! As mentioned, that mileage is nothing for these cars so don't let it be a worry to you. They are low stress engines with large tolerances.

When you look on the forums in the U.S a lot of people have 3 / 400k on there and they still go strong. We forget often the distances in the U.S, my mates that grew up there and in Canada are used to driving an hour each way to pop to a mates house for a couple of hours in an evening, nearest supermarket is 45 minutes away etc. so these cars are built for doing many 100,'s of k's. Use a good oil and change it regularly and it'll keep trucking. Speaking of trucks, these engines are also used in heavy duty applications such as trucks that haul heavy loads most days and do long distances, so put that engine into a lighter car for lower load use and use it normally, they will last a long time.

When looking at cars of this age, low mileage isn't necessarily a good thing. Cars like to be driven and have the fluids circulated, otherwise the internals can rust and clog up with corrosion, seals can dry rot etc. When you drive your car every day, overnight there's a still a small amount of oil film on all the parts, which also helps with protection on first start up in the morning. If you only drive a car once every 6 months, that oil film will have drained away and you get a rough metal to metal start up.

Thanks again. It's going to be our daily driver so it will be used, I know some people like to just use cars occasionally but if you have a car then why not use it? Oh, and I've found a spare wheel too ;-)

Good to hear 3rd gens are great daily drivers, especially with fuel injection you've get a reliable start hot or cold all year round. My '87 has been a daily driver for over 2 years, even when there has been a bit of snow out, enjoy yours

Well not really really done much to the ole girl been a bit lazy and just enjoying the car, I have lost a few rattles and swapped the speedo head as the car still had the jdm issue KM only clocks fitted so now have MPH clocks and have adjusted the mileage to suit the cars orig clocks had 104k (KMs) so the replacement clocks have been adjusted to 65k I will keep the old clocks as some proof of the cars true mileage the MOT history backs it up anyways.

Oh and found a souvenir from one of the previous owners wonder how long it had been under the carpet

Give the engine bay a well deserved clean after 25years off grime had been removed it does not look to bad

That's one of the nice things getting hold of these older cars - finding bits of memorabilia I've found hair combs, chewing gum (still in the packet luckily) and parking toll receipts.

Engine bay cleaned up very nice! What did you use? Jet washer / elbow grease?
