Thanks....I did notice that plate and pipe.....not sure what its for...unless its part of the decommissioned air con system?......there are one or two other multi plugs disconnected ...which I take to be for the air con or some other redundant feature...,it idles errractically occasionally....I'm actually wondering if it is the 350 Instead of the 305 I was told it was....I've looked up online and it appears the quadrajet was not fitted to 305s....although another online decoding site translates it as a 305.

Car Details:1986 Camaro, bought into Spain by me in 1993.
305 replaced by a 355, 750 Demon carb, RPM AirGap intake, Brodix heads, Hedman Hedders, 3" Flowmaster exhaust.
Wheels are Summit aluminium 5 spokes, tyres are 245 rear 225 front BF Goodrich.
B/M transmission, battery relocated to the rear, GoodMark 4" cowl steel hood.
Location:Spain East Coast
When the engine is idling is there air coming out of that tube ?
It´s not air con.

My 1986 305 had a plate in the same place but that was EGR, and I don´t think yours would
have been equipped with that.

My 1978 Camaro Berlinetta had a Quadrajet, thought they were standard issue back then.

That looks like EGR to me, but I've never had one with it to know what it does.

A quick look in the Haynes book of lies suggests there should be a valve there, with a pipe that goes back to the carb.

I'd look at plugging it, and look for any open ports on the carb where it may have once attached.

On a side note, although there are a number of symptoms listed, running out of steam when accelerating sounds like fuel starvation to me. What fuel pump are you using?

Maybe the carb needs a cleaning and all open ports plugging.

Thanks guys....don't think my 77 would have had EGR...I guess if its not a clagged fuel filter I should plug redundant ports. What's best to use?..are there manufactured port plugs or is it case of DIY?.....I don't know the feul pump type.

Sounds like fuel starvation to me... but it could be a number of things.

However I would just go through the following:

Vac leaks:
1. Remove the air filter and check for split hoses between the carb, intake, brake booster and valve covers.
2. Check for disconnected ports - to block them connect a short hose with a bolt or something stuff in the end. It's temporary but it will eliminate possible issues for a start.
3. Start the engine and spray brake cleaner across the hose joints and open ports - if the engine speed picks up that's where your leak is. Obviously don't spray it near anything hot like exhaust manifolds!

Fuel starvation:
1. Check your tank breather isn't blocked. The easiest way to check this is leave the gas cap off and go for a short drive (don't accelerate too hard with a full tank or you'll shoot petrol out the back...)
2. Check your fuel filter - they get badly clogged
3. Check all of your rubber fuel hoses and replace them - modern fuel destroys them and they can become delaminated inside causing a restriction or blockage - replace with R9 grade hose.
4. Replace your fuel pump and rod, it's on the side of the block - not too difficult. You could replace with a suitable electric one if you wanted to.
5. Pull the carb, strip and rebuild it. You'll need a set of gaskets, some carb cleaner and a clean work area.
