As mentioned, for short distance or traffic heavy commutes, then stick with petrol. If doing over 10 or 12k of mostly highly mileage per annum then a diesel 'could' be better.

Given the choice I'd always stick with petrol, but for pure torque in a heavy vehicle looking for economy, diesel has it's place. :thumbup:
Finally someone who knows the score. Diesels are great cars, I've had plenty and will have more. My Cupra Ibiza has 200 bhp with 300 lbs ft, 1150 kgs, 0-60 in the low 6's and 45 to the gallon, I know of no other hot hatch which can match that in terms of economy and performance. Owned for three and half years with good reliability and decent running costs.

I think I might have a 123 D next time round, remapped with 260 bhp and 400 lbs ft and 45 to the gallon again. :D
