I am currently tearing into my engine bay and tidying everything up and I am sick of starring at that ugly evaporator box sticking out the bulkhead. My question is. Once I get the inner fender out the way to access all the bolts to get the box off what parts am I gonna need to make it a non a/c car? Will I need to get another fan or can I use the current one and just re wire it? What about the heating matrix as the pipes go into the evaporator box? Then I will need to track down one of these blanking panels but I haven't seen any with holes in for the heater pipes. :/

Anyone done a full A/C removal?

Interestingly i saw a post recently about this. I think it was on nastyz28.com. A guy suggested a unit that goes in place of the big ac box and fits a regular heater core in there. That way you get heat still. Will have to try and find the post. Normally the AC delete panels just plug up the hole left after removing the unit, and doesn't leave for the option of running a heater.

Hopefully I can use the current fan but Pretty sure I just need to drill the holes for the heating pipes. Lots of room it that square bit on the right too. Might hide some stuff in there like the likes of the vacuum ball and electronic ignition box etc. I'm going super simple and tidy with this engine bay after I spray it.

Perfect find, that's the one :thumbup: :thumbup:

While you have everything out, definitely get a brand new fan. The existing one will fit but at 35 years of age, it won't work for much longer and it's such as pain to access, best to switch now for the £20 or so it costs, cheap insurance. I should have changed mine, it has a slight squeak like a hamster wheel, no way am i going to be changing it anytime soon.

Good idea. I had the inner fenders off today. There was only about 10 bolts or so and you can still leave the wing on to access it. It's not as bad as I thought. Though I better change it anyway. Shame that blank panel was so expensive. I could nearly understand if it was made of metal but 134 quid posted for that piece of plastic lol. Had to be done though.

We removed the A/C heater unit from Camilla years ago- and replaced all with a standard heater blower unit

I was under the instruction of someone who knew what to do- so can't help much on the practicalities- but it all seems to have worked for past 12 years or so

some day I will fit a Vintage air system......................

Have done two, one on a 3rd gen and just done my second gen.

But, I wouldn't call them 'full' A/C removals as the larger box and additional vents still remain inside. However, the gubbins from the engine bay are removed.

The box you've bought is what you want, but you may also need a new fan (not the motor, the fan itself) as the fan is thinner for the non a/c box.

To make it work in the easiest way you'll need to keep the air resistor, I cut it into the new panel. The relay is needed as well, but the other wires can be safely removed. As can all the pipes / radiator / pump. You'll also need a different belt as it won't go round the pump any more.

The pipes come out around the box you've bought, you don't need to cut holes for them. The thin part after the bulge for the fan, one pipe comes out above it and the other under it. On a second gen anyway as it's the same box I bought. But the mounting holes did't line up that well so needed some tweaking, and don't forget to seal it to the bulkhead or you'll lose fan pressure / power.

This will make it work for direct / heat / fan etc. and clear up the engine bay a treat.

But, you'll be left with a large vacuum controlled box (the non a/c cars were cable driven not vacuum) behind the dash, the extra A/C vents and the A/C contol panel. Which will work, but will still say A/C on it.....That's why I don't call what I've done a 'full' A/C removal.
