I heard this sound whilst at the traffic lights, can't seem to locate it but it doesn't sound too good? Any idea what it could be? Not there at idle, only when it goes above 1,000 rpm, sounds like a dry, rattly kind of sound, heard in the vid just after revving.

Ray before you get too involved just remove all the auxiliary belts from it and retest but not for too long obviously !!
Reason behind it years ago mkll mondeo came in engine rattling sure sounded like small end worn !!!
Had a light bulb moment removed the aux belt and the noise disappeared turned out to be the aux belt tensioner !!!
Hope it's something just as simple
Stu

Cheers Stu, i hope so too! That is a good idea about removing the belts. I just did a mini service last week - new thermostat, hoses and belts (thermostat was stuck open). Nothing wrong with the old belts and hoses, but i have no idea how old they are and didn't want to risk anything (a heater hose did give in about a year ago so that was a bit of sign that the others may be on their way). I think the hoses were original as they are GM stamped. Not even a hair line crank in the belts or hoses after inspecting. I wonder then, maybe the new belts i put on are too tight? Seemed ok on the way home, didn't notice any noise. Will listen out again in the morning and if it comes back, as suggested i'll remove the belts for a few minutes and listen for any changes. Thanks guys

Cheers Neil, only, it doesn't have a belt tensioner as it's v belts BUT i think you may be onto something as the belts are new and nice and tight. Maybe it's power steering pump related? It does have a bit of a bearing noise coming from it (very slight). Or maybe the water pump? It's intermittent, was fine all of Wednesday, Thursday noticed it once and Friday a couple of times

Yes, it's an odd year - '87 so it has v belts still whereas the other years are all serpentine!

No but thanks for following up!

It seems to be intermittent. I think it's been narrowed down to 3 things... water pump, power steering pump or thrust bearings on the crank.

I think the first thing that needs doing is taking the belts off and seeing how it runs without accessories for a few minutes. Then i can also check for end play on the crank using a bar to try and move the crank pulley back and forth. Hoping it's just an accessory!
