Hey thanks. in the mean time i have sorted it out. The problem was my passenger light blew 2 days before the MOT and then a week later the drivers side 1 blew.....sods law lol.
anyway since then i have fitted an HID kit to the original units :)

not an easy mod but very worth while!...headlights have never been better and it all looks totally factory standard :)
i can post some pictures if anyone interested

I'd be curious to see what you installed - I take it the HID kit was installed after the MOT? Have you managed to adjust it so it's not blinding oncoming drivers?

Yeah i installed the HID kit after the mot and i figure that gives me another year to worry about getting some replacements now...lol.
theyre pretty well adjusted too me and my friend found an empty road late and night and set the beam pattern up so they line up on the correct side of the road nicely and dont blind on coming traffic. the difference is pretty good too and well worth doin!.

adding pictures on here is a pain as i cant work out my password for the photo sharing thing.
il give it a go though

These are for sale for £60 (or make an offer) for a set of 4 (as they're for a late 70's Firebird) if anyone is interested: (not mine, just saw them pop up ) : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pontiac-Trans ... 2100047364

Hi 78,

Did you get your Hella lights wired up? I'm planning to buy the 1LB 003 177-081 for my Trans Am (same as the -511s you bought but without the sidelight) and just wanted to make sure they had a good UK-spec beam pattern.

Chris

Hi Chris,

Sorry - i had a wiring issue and it caused the car to be under a cover until last weekend (as i couldn't start it)

I'm very sure that will work but unfortunately i have no evidence to support this. Maybe worth buying from a retailer that offers a decent returns policy, and worse case, return it, if they kick up a fuss, argue that it's not fit for purpose as it won't pass an MOT (you could tell them it's for a VW Scirocco / Audi 200 which would have been sold from new in the UK).

Hope that helps?

Cheers,

Ray

OK I'll just have to give them a try. Got to be better than the sealed beams in there at the moment, which I think are US spec as they have DOT printed on them.

I'm also going to build a wiring harness for them so they're powered directly off the battery through a relay. The stock wiring looks a bit weak.

I'll try to remember to report back here when I'm done!

Fingers crossed they will be spot on :)

Ye definitely worth doing the relay upgrade. Be great if you can document / share the implementation. Even with a new wiring harness it's recommended, due to the pathing going through the main switch which is a lot of amperage to be travelling around the car and dash. Especially when running halogens, it puts a higher draw on the wires. Good luck with it!

Well these are my new headlight units. I'm basing my wiring upgrade on the Thirdgen.org guide here: http://www.thirdgen.org/headlightupgrade/
