Hi Guys!

I have a 72 350 ss with a 69 396 fitted, now the steering is light enough but it takes about 300 turns lock to lock so you have to plan a turn about 2 weeks in advance!

I am sure everyone of you knows exactly what I am talking about but I really do need to change the box to a quicker ratio.

Now, I have been told that an early T/A power set up will be ok if i can find one.

Anyway, if anyone has any decent advice or knows of any second hand / breaker cars I would appreciate it. (I'm not loaded) so £1000's conversions are out of the question.

PS> I am a member of a MB forum & all they seem to do is pick hole's in peoples cars & deliver ridiculous, sarcastic & unhelpful comments all the time. I don't see that going on in this forum so far.

Box from a 3rd gen Iroc is your best bet. 2.25 turns lock to lock. You need to swap your 2nd gen pitman arm onto it, and will also need some adapters for the hydraulic lines.

Any 2nd gen steering box should be interchangable, ideally a Z28 one as it'll be the quickest ratio...

but as FlakMonkey says 3rd gen boxes are probably cheaper and 2nd hand ones are more likely to still be serviceable as they'll be newer, as he says Pitman arm will need changing but it's a relatively cheap part, and pipes will be metric so need adaptors... (or I'm told, the threaded inserts can be carefully prised out the old box and put in replacement to save using adaptors :crazy: )

I've got a 91' TransAm box to go on mine one day.. :shh:

I think the PAS and manual steering arms are different, but I could be wrong.

Another recommendation for 3rd gen, but look for the ones from IROC or 16" wheels, as they had the best ratio.

No need to worry about fittings being metric if you are moving from manual to power, but make sure you get the pump that matches. You may be able to get the full kit together if you are lucky. My recommendation is Rocky @ American Technique in Watford. He's always breaking 3rd gens, and had at least a couple of boxes available last time I asked.

The pitman arm will be your problem. There are 3 or 4 available, and I suspect the manual one is different to the power ones. After that, the shape/length varied by year, depending on what track rods you had. You need to research what steering setup you have now to work out what arm you will need.

I have a pump with the metric fittings, you'd just need hoses. I don't think I have any, but I'll have a look...
