Car Details:1968 Camaro RS SS
Hi Everyone,

Thought I'd say hello as just joined the club after purchasing a 1968 Camaro 350 RS SS from the US as a restoration project, the car has been stored in a garage for 30yrs!

First time I have owned an American car and looking forward to meeting other owners and joining in the forum discussions (most likely adding them).

It is an auto atm but have been thinking of converting to the 4 speed Muncie transmission.

But..........you've taken it all to bits! Doesn't look like it need restoring or am I getting soft? Oh and autos are for women and old men so do the right thing, add the missing pedal!

Hi Martin,

It is all in bits and have an empty body shell ready for media blasting or acid dipping...can't decide which, is there any preference on this site? I was under the understanding the car would need the general servicing after 30yrs of standing in a garage and would only need a few hundred pounds spent on it to get back on the road but one thing lead to another after finding a broken leaf spring, all bushes perished, fuel lines leaking, mice nests pretty much everywhere including the heater assembly, vacuum pipes degraded for RS headlight covers, front floors have a few holes starting and a hole in the passenger door shut...
The missing pedal will definitely be added, is there anywhere in the UK to source the manual gearbox and linkage or is the US my best bet?

Parts to convert do pop up for sale here but not often. I make pedals from scratch - no magic in them, but the rest - bell, gearbox mainly are hard to find. Fly, clutch and shifter all readily available new and used. Also many pitfalls when buying a 4 speed, bone up before spending blindly. You may be able to source the parts you need (at least the difficult ones) form the US but by the time you factor in all the costs it will be pricey. But worth it!

That's a really clean looking project car :thumbup:
Whatever you do avoid the acid dip, you will never remove it all and it will come back to haunt you later.
Media blasting is good, but on a car as clean as this maybe just spend some time with a DA sander and some hand blocks...
4 on the floor will be more fun :twisted:

Welcome to the forum.......that looks to be a pretty decent starting place. Dipping is the only way to get inside all the sections but to be honest apart from the cills you can pretty much access enough in that shell to give it a clean and some anti-rust spray coating and it will be way more cost effective and less hassle IMO.

Personally don't know why you would go to an old Muncie with all the clunky linkages when there are quite a lot of 5 speed kits out there on the shelf, but if you like spending a heap of time hunting for all the pieces of the jigsaw then who I am to warn you off ! ;)

I thought about going manual for my 69 but in the end I just wanted it back on the road, stuffed the TH350 back in and I'm enjoying it again.
Can always save up and do the swop later of course :shh:
