Car Details:68 pontiac firebird coupe project car,my aim is a street friendly,lightly modified pro.touring style.
Lowered ,mild body mods,400 cu in SBC engine, Muncie 4speed, 10 bolt posi axle,disc front drum rear.
68 firebird convertible ( long term project) Stock resto/mod style ,400 pontiac th350
Looks like a rare find in the UK (2nd gen without rust issues)
Always a lot better to get a car with a good body but some mechanical flaws as it is quicker, easier and cheaper than getting a good driver with serious body/paint issues .
personal taste but I also quite like the Pontiac wheels .

Looks like you've got a good one there... :)

Looks like a nice standard Berlinetta. Expect it's a 305 as the 350 wasn't available from the factory in anything but the Z28.

If it's go no rust you can't go far wrong. I can tell you every area on these that rusts... :shh:

Well, had it a couple of weeks now. Nothing too depressing to report thankfully.

Still found no rust, which is good news :-)

Has a puff of smoke on startup, not uncommon on the 305 LG4 motor. Most likely seals, it did sit for 20 years in california prior to coming over here. Not sure if I'll bother doing them, or just save up for a 350 or 383 motor.....

Slight weep / leak around the power steering, again no biggy.

Seems to hold back when driving. Think the timing is out but the timing marks / tab has long since gone, so not sure how to do that. Need to find TDC accurately first which may need a new tool! Then need to find out where this particular motor needs to be timed, I understand there are three possible positions. 12 O'Clock, 1.30 and a mark someone has on mine around 10 O'Clock. But I've got a full MSD dizzy / coil / plugs / lead system to put in, but I'll check it to see where I am first.

Other than that it's lots of tidying up. Got it booked in for some initial paint work (just to tidy some bits) and doing some interior work for now. Found a front grill, ordered a 2nd hand spoiler. Fixed door handles, made parcel shelf, replaced broken window winder etc. Lots of little bits so far!

Still happy though, miss the 3rd gen as it was so tidy but prefer the character of this one TBH :chevy:

You will need a timing tab fitted before you begin, something like this

Pull out #1 spark plug.
Get a length of plastic or rubber pipe. This is because plastic or rubber will not dislodge any carbon that may be on the piston that could get jammed between the piston and cylinder, scoring it. Also the chances of a 2 foot length of pipe dropping into the cylinder are damn near impossible.
Turn the engine slowly until you feel the piston pushing the pipe upwards. At some point the pipe will stop moving. Rock the engine back and forth slightly until you are sure it's at the very top and make a mark on the harmonic balancer. Now continue turning the engine in the same direction until you feel the pipe moving downwards. Again rock the engine slightly to get the exact point the piston starts moving. Make another mark. Using eyeball and guesswork make your final mark between the two previous marks, this is the exact TDC.
With the engine at TDC make the final mark on the balancer to coincide with the "0" on the timing tab.

Thanks for that, gave me lots of help :D

But, I changed the dizzy over last night. Before hand I chucked the timing light on and saw where the timing mark on the harmonic balancer was there was an equivalent lump of 'goo' on engine. When I cleaned that off the timing tab was there and all the marks were clear as day! Don't know how anyone had timed it before (probably not for a LONG time I suspect) as it clearly hadn't been cleaned for ages. (Before anyone says anything it will all get cleaned up over the winter, but I've only had it three weeks so far and am just trying to get it running better so I can use it a little more!)

All timed up at standard 4deg now, but will be changing it to around 10-12 tonight following other advice on this forum!
