Hi guys, so today me and the old man were going to replace the fuel pipe coming from the pump to the tank as it seems to have seen better days, however when we removed it there was a screw in the end of the pipe to the return line to the tank blocking it?? can anyone think of why someone would do this? the car runs fine and is a carbed 84 Z28

Have you got a vented gas cap?

Carburetor engines do not have a fuel return line, but the 84 Z28 had the option of the Cease Fire (sorry Cross Fire) fuel injected engine which did have a return fuel line. So someone may have done some parts swapping in the past

My carburated '86 had a return line from the fuel pump to tank, it was made redundant by a pump swap.

My 2nd gen has a return line but it's for vapour as opposed to fuel. My 3rd gen has a return line for fuel.

On the 2nd gen, the return line was also disconnected (though not plugged up, scarily) at the engine bay. As mentioned earlier if you have a a carb then you don't need the fuel return line. If you have a vented fuel cap then this will be enough to make sure there is no negative pressure build up in the tank. I don't have a vented cap, just a blocked off rubber line near the tank so will find out soon if that will be ok.

Thank you guys, That's all the info I needed and wanted! What would I be looking for in the VIN to see if it was a crossfire? It did seem odd that someone would block it but its ran without problems since ive had it.

Funny I asked about this on the Yank 3rd gen facebook page, someone there called me a 'dumbarse' for not knowing what it was..... Friendly bunch, should of just come here first! Never let me down with helpful info!

That's a bit harsh of them to say that, it's only a question you asked, how else would you know. I always ask dumb questions because i don't know what i don't know. Everyone's always really helpful here, i agree, glad to hear that it's sorted

I stand corrected. That particular model had a return line to prevent vapour lock due to it's close proximity to the exhaust manifold.
