Expensive mistakes.

I make a lot of mistakes, yesterday i found the most expensive one. The new windscreen had survived for 4 years in it's delivery box, being shuffled around etc. and i test fit it and left it in place a couple of weeks ago. I've done various work on the car since and cleaned the dust off last night... only to find loads of what looked like bug splats. looking closer, half of the glass had pinholes :shock: Then i remembered that when i was making a bracket, i used an angle grinder with a cut off wheel, which must have sent some sparks towards the glass :( so now it's fooked. And the glass guy is coming on Monday. I've been searching this morning and found that TopSpeed Automotive in Addlestone have them in stock, so £240 + £15 delivery later, it's arranged for delivery this Friday. I originally bought the glass for £150 inc. delivery from usautomotive, so the mistake has meant the glass cost is a little over £500 including installation, basically double of what it would have been. In hindsight (Stu has rightly named this 'project hindsight') it would have simply cost a few minutes of time for me to cover the glass in the brown paper masking roll that's sat on the floor.

We all tend to learn the lesson about grinders throwing white hot debris that wrecks glass the hard way.
Sometimes the glass can be saved with a very sharp bladed scraper if the damage is not too severe...
I would always say to cover any glass with something like stout cardboard if there is any chance of a stream of sparks going in that direction .
Hope all goes well when the windshield is fitted :thumbup:

I was hoping so, but it turns out that the shards had nicely embedded themselves into the glass and being on the drivers side, it would be quite noticeable.

Managed to find a windscreen in stock from Topspeed automotive and they delivered on Friday, just in time for the glass fitter on Monday. Installed the front and rear screen yesterday morning, so that's a good step forward! Haven't done the molding yet as it needed a good clean first. I started working on the door frame and door weather stripping, then i'll give the glass molding a good scrub and install it.

Ordered some new shoes and springs for the drum brakes as they don't seem to be playing ball, so that's next on the list after the seals and molding are sorted. Seem to have misplaced the trunk molding. Wondering if i can use a universal one instead of paying a load for shipping from the states for some rubber.

It should work. From memory when I replaced mine about 10 years ago, it was just a length of the same piece, that just glued in, so use a bit of the old one to source something that will work.. if you have it...

Ok that's good to know :) The one that was in there was quite new looking, but it seems to have gone for a walk. Will have to have a good search again, otherwise it's measuring tape time.

The latest battle is now getting the chrome trim to clip. Sounds easy enough but not on this project. At first i couldn't get the top piece to clip in, no matter how much pressure i applied. I even added silicon grease and it made no difference. I ended up using a screwdriver to pry the clips out a bit as they were too stiff. It's almost the case that you need the glass out to get enough angle for the trim to clip down. Eventually got the top piece in but even worse now on the side pieces. I can get the passenger side clipped in for either the corner section lcip, or the straight section. Not both :tired: If i clip down the straight section, the corner section does not want to clip in. no matter how much force you put on it. If you loosen the clip, it clips in but then the straight section of it pops out. I was literally going back and forth for an hour on that section. It almost like a see saw, one part goes down, the other pops up. Oh and the side trim interlocks into the top section, so when you try and do that, it pops out the top clip for the side piece and the first clip on the centre section. This has become very tedious and my patience has worn very thin. I have no idea how i'm going to get around this. It should just be a case that you install the clips and push the piece in place. I have the original studs and therefore stud locations all around the front. New clips too, original trim that i pulled off the car.

I also finished installing the door weatherstripping. That's almost one thing ticked off the list. Almost, because the passenger side glass needs adjustment in order to close properly, the glass on the front section is in too far. The driver side is adjusted but that's still way off. Can't get it to touch the striker, as by then, the glass is already on the weatherstrip on the front section so the door can't close any further. It seems i've already maxed out the adjustment so need to work on that some more. All these little simple tasks that should take a few hours are taking days and weeks. :thumbdown:

The glass needs to go back little, and the front up a bit.... It's a bitch getting it lined up, and sealing properly...
I did warn about the window trim clips not working too well, hence silicone sealing mine on too.

I found a bolt that can be adjusted, will post a pic later, that helped to get it tilted as you mentioned. Passenger side seems ok now, can close the door with the windows up without any drama. Adjusted the striker too so it closes as it should. Of course, nothing is ever done on this car, so what happens is when open the door handle, it clicks open, but you can't open the door.. you have to push the door in a bit, then you can lift the handle again and open it properly :roll:

The drivers door striker is also aligned, but for some reason i can't close the door properly anymore. Stops at the first click. Closed earlier. :crazy: Still not happy about the glass, it's better, but still a bit too far in at the front.

Installed the rearview mirror which needed a clean and paint.

Installed the sill panels too. Gave them a good clean with mr.muscle a couple of times and some thinner. There was a lot of dirt and grime on them, i thought they would need to be replaced, luckily they brushed up well.

Yep, those clips are pretty awful. I don't trust them for going over 20 mph. Defintely going to run silicone over them. Finally managed to get all the front clipped in, don't know how. My arms are killing me, took a good couple of hours. Still have an issue with the passenger side corner, it sticks out, even though it's clipped in. Driver side sits flush. It even gouged some paint out of the corner channel, so had to mix up a small amount of touch up paint. Pointless as it scratched off again. Put grease on it to hopefully stop it rusting :evil: So another thing that's 'done' but not really :roll:

Still have to do the rear window, yay. And that goes all the way around :thumbdown:

Next job is to sort out the rear drums. I have replacement AC Delco shoes to put in, plus a rebuild kit, so all of the springs etc. Let's hope the rear brakes work after this :yawn:

Little update - working on the brakes at the moment. Needed new pads on one side so ordered a set from rockauto along with a few other random bits. Got a spring rebuild kit but it didn't come with the parking brake rebuild parts. So had to buy a full rebuild kit from California. Still cheaper than here... £12 + £12 for shipping (included all customs paid upfront) so total cost was £24. In comparison, US Automotive i believe were selling just the one side for £25 plus delivery. So over £50 to redo the rears. Ye, no, ordered from Cali for half the price. Same for the drum shoes - they were something like £30 plus for a rear set. £8 or so from Rockauto with VAT. Rear drums here, £50 each. Rockauto and other suppliers... £14 for a PAIR. Bloody joke. I'm ok with people making some profit, it's business after all... but be reasonable. I do get annoyed by it because there's no need to overcharge by so much. Rockauto etc. are making profit on their prices so don't tell me a UK supplier isn't buying at cost, and getting massive discount on shipping as they will be placing larger orders and going by boat. Plus, all of the expense of getting the stuff here is a business cost so it's a tax right off. Grr.
I had to cave in though and get a parking brake cable from US Automotive. £5 inc VAT from Rockauto... or £33 delivered from USAutomotive. W*ankers. That is the definition of extortion. That cable will cost about £1 - £2 from the manufacturer, if that. I could have got it from Rockauto but didn't want to risk it not being here for the weekend, as i wanted to finish the brakes by this weekend as it's the last main part left to do. Last few things left are to get the door panels and rear interior trim panels cleaned / maybe repainted, and get the rear chrome installed.
I still need a trunk seal, ChevyStu sent me a link to one on ebay uk (thanks Stu!). The only thing is they want £35 for it... it's £5 from Summit (see earlier rant). As i'm planning to visit the U.S (was hoping to be there already, looking like October / November), i'll add one to the suitcase and in the meantime use some fat draft insulation that i have a bit of left over... it'll be kept in the garage so should be ok for a month or so.
