I asked about a Vacuum gauge and the readings, because we can tell what's going on inside your motor from those readings.

A colour tune kit will also tell us what the mixtures are at those RPM's

Your mechanical fuel pump flow rate should be good enough to overcome any small air leaks in the system. and it would not get better at higher RPM's it would get worse. :(

Odd question.

Do you have ethanol added to your petrol?
They started that BS here only to find that the ethanol caused all sorts of problems when it began swelling and dissolving the rubber fuel lines from the inside.
I have a Craftsman lawn tractor that had similar symptoms to your car and after much cursing and head scratching found that the fuel line had swollen inside.
Check out this to see what I mean

Thanks for the suggestion.
I only use v power racing or an equiverlant here in Germany, the high ethanol content is called E10 here and I have never used it.

But you have drawn my mind to the only fuel hose I have not changed which is the one that goes to the carb. I will check this out tomorrow and replace it

Hopefully my fuel line will be here tomorrow and I will change that the weekend

Sorry Guys I have been away with work.

Fuel line fitted and still the same problem. Although the fuel line did need replacing.

I started the car this morning and the fuel filter was full, I decided to run the car on tick over for an hour to see what happened.
After an hour the fuel filter was empty, this can only lead me to possible causes.
1, I have ran out of fuel, this cannot be the case as it is 3/4 full
2, I am sucking in air.

I don't see any other explanation, even if the fuel pump was weak (it's a new one) there is no way the fuel filter could get empty unless their is coming from the carb side.

Could my fuel pump rod be worn or even worse my camshaft  but why would it be ok at hard throttle :wtf:

I am changing the fuel sender and pickup this weekend, that is the last thing to change in the fuel line system.

I wish i could help, this sounds like a real bugger of a problem.

Hopefully it's the pickup sock in the tank that's clogged and as you'll be changing that out soon, it should take care of it. Otherwise you are probably right about the fuel pump rod. I wonder if, to rule that out, you could plumb in a temporary electric fuel pump and run it for a while like you did before to see if the fuel level drops?

Car Details:1986 Camaro, bought into Spain by me in 1993.
305 replaced by a 355, 750 Demon carb, RPM AirGap intake, Brodix heads, Hedman Hedders, 3" Flowmaster exhaust.
Wheels are Summit aluminium 5 spokes, tyres are 245 rear 225 front BF Goodrich.
B/M transmission, battery relocated to the rear, GoodMark 4" cowl steel hood.
Location:Spain East Coast
A clogged sock on the pickup could, I´m thinking, lead to a bad idle because the pump is not working so hard as at
full throttle.
At full throttle the pump would be overcoming the clogged sock until such time it got sooo bad.

I thought those sock filters just crumbled away with age....

So did the engine stop running?

Fuel filters always look empty!

The car kept running, there was always a tiny, little fuel in the filter.
I have a feeling it was running more on Vapours than anything else :o

I did not manage to drop the tank this weekend, but all going well this week on one evening I should get it done.

I have lost so much driving time with the car and it is driving me nuts

Yes that's how the filters always look when the motor is running.

OK you can keep on wasting time and money chasing the fuel problem because its your time and money but the fuel problem you think you have is not what you should be looking at.

Trust me I work on these old cars all day every day. I own 4 at the moment. I have owned over 70 american cars in the last 36 years and I'm sure that the fuel problem you describe is not what is affecting your motor.

I would still say it electrical or timing.

Got to agree with pa I'm afraid, I also think you're barking up the wrong tree
