Painted!

Will post some pics up shortly.

Only thing left is to figure out the passenger door. Not sure if the runs will sand out, or if it will need a coat of red and then some clear.

Got a few runs, one on the driver side quarter panel near the light housing. Another on the passenger side door shut. Another on the rear bumper.

Now we move onto assembly time! Going to see if i can find a glass installer to come around on Saturday morning. Does anyone know what sort of price i should be paying? I have the front and back glass, just need it bonded in. I'm not even worried about the chrome window trim, i can take care if that later (will need to cut n buff the paint so better with the trim off).

Next steps are to sort 1 thing out on the drivers side suspension... I got some poly dust boots for the ball joints but wasn't too happy with the fit, so i used the rubber ones that came with the Moog balljoints. Except for on one balljoint. Forgot to change that out. So need to get the car off the axle stands, then jack it up on the driver side, undo the castle nut for the spindle, lower the control arm, replace the boot and then put it back together.

Once that's done i will add grease via the grease nipples (that always make me laugh) as all the BJ's are new and need greasing. That means i can put the inner arches on, put the g braces on, put the fenders on, sort out the lights and front bumper, get the hood on, install the window regulator on the passender side, install both side windows, get the interior in, cut n buff the trunk and quarter panel to get the spoilers on, get the rear seats in, get the locks and door handles installed, have the final weight in the car and weld in the sub frame connectors. Get some fluid in the brakes, bleed them, get some fuel in the tank and start it!

Coupla hours work at most.... !!!!

Congrats dude..
Looking forward to seeing it all done.. I can get the number of the guy that fitted my front screen via my bodywork guy (was about £40/50 I think) but I think he's North London based so probably cheaper to call a local place...

Gimme a shout if you need some extra hands for anything tricky..

Thanks Stu! Just sent you a message about the window installer as i got a quote for £155 and they said they would want the whole day for it, just to make sure they don't mess it up. That is nice of them to care that much, so they get a thumbs up for that  but at the same time, it doesn't need anything more doing than sticking on the glue and placing the screen in... so he says lol. But ye, £155 is too much, i paid that much for the front windscreen lol.

Working my way through yellow pages but too many national places (i.e we charge and arm and leg and get scared of anything that's pre 2000 lol).

Thanks for the offer of help too... may just have to take you up on it :)

Well, it seems i'm in the wrong industry. Just been quoted £80 for the front and £80 for the back. The guy said it was hard to quote as it's not a vehicle they're familiar with (fair enough) so they weren't sure how complex it was. (in my head i'm thinking that it's a 1970's muscle car, so the word complex doesn't really come into the picture lol). I said to the guy it's pretty straightforward as it isn't flush mounted etc, don't need the trim doing as it needs polishing etc. so will be done at a later stage, and it's literally a case of applying bonding glue to the window and putting it into the recess, it really is that simple... to which i was told i'm not a winscreen fitter so how would i know :wtf: Well, i took them out undamaged and it was bonding glue around the inside of the glass that just sat on the pinch weld all around... that's as simple as it is.

It's really, really simple - you actually can't do it wrong if you have the right bonding glue and some suction pads. You just place it in the recess. You just have to clean the area (freshly painted so not much cleaning to do), applyi bonding glue to the glass edge and place it in. 1 hour for front and back? £160 per hour paycheck... hmm, think it's time to get a new career. I'm tempted to buy a couple of suction pads and some 3m windscreen bonding compound, £30 worth of materials and Stu and or Phil and or my dads help to get the front windscreen sat in place lol. You can take the rear screen in and out on your own... i put it back in place after it got tinted, just with no glue. It doesn't need any positioning as you can't not put it in the right place. Ugh...

Anything stopping me from buying 1 of these for £8 (UPOL Tiger Seal one component polyurethane sealant and adhesive) and a couple of suction pads and doing it myself? (with a helper to hold the other side).

I guess you scuff the painted area of the car with a scotch brite, clean (with paint thinner / similar spirit) put some masking tape on the paint just incase, run a bead (3mm according to UPOLS description) around the glass, put in place and leave it there, don't move the car for a few hours (Which won't happen in my case anyway). Do the same for the rear.

Anything i'm missing??

Sealant / bonding:

Glass suction cups:

Getting quoted +£150 makes me think i'm missing something...

I don't think it's that hard to do... I watched the last time mine was done (on insurance luckily).
It was a 2 man job due to size and weight of the glass and width of the car.
I guess as long as the seal is totally watertight it'll be fine..

I tried to get a number for the glass fitter today but couldn't get hold of the bodywork guy who knows him.
Maybe drive to the nearest Autoglass type place and offer one of the guys cash deal to do it.

Thanks for trying to get in touch with guy! Funnily enough, what you suggested about popping into a local place is what i had done a couple of years ago... there's a place around the corner from me where i get all the fasteners from and a few doors down was an independent window company. Popped in one day and they said they could do it for £75 cash total (both windows) and they had a guy that had been doing classic cars on and off for the past couple of decades, so they would send him around to do it. When i went a couple of months ago, the place had disappeared and turned into a computer shop. I posted up on facebook and have been sent a couple of leads, so will call them today, hopefully with some good news! If you do get anything back from your body guy please do let me know

Still on the lookout for a glass man. Probably be weekend after next to get it fitted. Sadly, won't be able to take it to Speedfest as it will be just about done, but will probably doing the final things on it that weekend.

Latest update is that everything is now painted.

Assembled most of the front end - the bumper and bonnet are left. Need to install the new headlights first (plan to do that tonight) in order to install the front bumper. Bonnet will be left as the last thing... once the windows are in and the engine is running. Fenders took ages to align, not overly happy with them but it's the best i could do. I keep promising pics so i'll try and get some loaded up today.

Hi fella.. I should see my bodywork guy today so I'll chase him on glass fitter's number... Good news you're at assembly stage.
(just realised I never replied to your headlight query but yes any Mini fitting seemed to work for me... I think one set I had to trim the rear of the light casing to fit inside the light bucket... I bought a few cheap chinese pairs that either cracked or fell apart, so get something semi decent, the ones you listed look OK)

Such a shame it won't be finished by Speedfest, is there no outside chance, even if you leave the interior form example ?

I remember seeing a guide about fitting panels on 2nd gens that said to work from the rear quarters forward as the doors are the hardest bit, then fenders and hood together, then front end..

No worries, thanks for the original advise, used it to go ahead with a set of those lights. They arrived on Friday but haven't had a chance to open the box. Aim to get them installed tonight, will let you know how it goes... thanks for the advise about them.

There is an extremely thin one... if i can get the glass installed on Saturday, then i can get the subframe connectors welded in which means i can get fluid into the brake pipes and fuel lines. Need to also get a new gasket for the transmission pan and straighten out the transmission oil pan as it has leaked out its fluids. Need to install the locks, mirrors etc. which i was gonna do after clear sanding, but could get away with it. Interior is at the bottom of the list, as the front seats and dash are in, so that would work. Then would get it to MOT next Saturday. There is a chance, just a slim one lol.

Ye, that's the one

Doors are lined up against the quarter and rocker panel. The bugger is getting the fender lined up... getting the vertical gap, the fender top to match the door top and the body line to match are err, fun lol. It's kind of like the contractors pyramid... you can have 2 but not all 3. Then there's also the depth of fender against the door. You move one and it affects the other so you're basically in a cycle, going over and over until it sits about right in all areas. Got a bigger gap on the drivers side door to fender. I've seen the way this usually gets fixed it by welding steel rod to the door / fenders edges and then filing back until you get a nice consistent gap. Sooo that won't be happening lol. It's sort of ok as is, will have to live with it as i've done about all the adjust that i can. Uploading some pics at the moment...

Are you planning on going still? What's the latest with the MOT situation?
