Hello fellas,

I've just bought an '85 IROC, partly missing its exhaust. It has tubular headers but no y-pipe, and finding the y-pipe seems to be the tricky bit.

The headers are probably generic SBC headers (speedmaster??), not designed specifically for the F-body, so would there be anywhere I could purchase a bolt-on connection between the headers and the cat? I've scoured the internet and not found anything likely. There's nothing on the speedmaster website.

Is having a y-pipe and cat delete fabricated the only realistic solution? I've spoken to a couple of exhaust fabricators and they've both said they couldn't quote without seeing the car (tricky as it has no MOT). Could anyone give me guidance on a likely cost (stainless/mandrel bends/2.5", etc...) for having the y-pipe made?

Any advice welcome!

Car Details:1986 Camaro, bought into Spain by me in 1993.
305 replaced by a 355, 750 Demon carb, RPM AirGap intake, Brodix heads, Hedman Hedders, 3" Flowmaster exhaust.
Wheels are Summit aluminium 5 spokes, tyres are 245 rear 225 front BF Goodrich.
B/M transmission, battery relocated to the rear, GoodMark 4" cowl steel hood.
Location:Spain East Coast
How would the Y pipe connect to the existing headers, what do you have exactly.
Pictures help.

No pictures as I don't have the car yet - it needs to be collected on a trailer, hopefully next weekend. I'm just trying to work out how to tackle this before the car arrives so I can hit the ground running.

Ideally, I'd like to work with what I've got, but I have heard some good reviews of the hookers.

One possibility is to put the stock manifolds back on, source a scabby stock y-pipe and try to get it MOT'd like that so the car's at least mobile. However, Rocky's already informed me most stock y's are too rotten to be salvaged!

Woah hang on you finally bought one?! Wowsers about time. I'm the one that's been giving you jip on PH. I'm guessing its the manual one with the smilie on the rear diff? :)

Welcome aboard.

As for y pipe, it does depend on your headers. You need to find out what make they are and go from there. They are generally a bit of a mare to get on but they do eventually :)

Hey, I did say third time lucky!

I almost literally drove past that car to and from work, so seemed a bit rude to pass it up. Car's solid, but showing a little cosmetic wear. Needs a few bits and bobs to get going again, but mostly just sorting the exhaust. The PO's plans were to have a custom x-pipe and side-exits made up. I was hoping I'd just be able to buy an off-the-shelf y-pipe and cobble the existing system back together, but it doesn't seem to work quite like that!

The PO bought the headers off ebay.com a couple of years ago, and thinks they're speedmaster. Like I say, speedmaster don't seem to make a y-pipe to fit the f-body, and I have no idea how 'standard' the header exits are to allow a different manufacturer's y-pipe to be used...

The bay of many fleas has a complete 3rdgen exhaust system on it at the moment with headers , it's up norf in Lichfield with 4 days to go and only at a few quid so far....... Not exactly a popular item so you might be able to steal it at the last minute , third gens don't take kindly to having twin pipe systems fitted as it has to hop over the axle, I ran mine down the passenger side cill and welded two cherry bombs on that exited just before the wheel arch , used to set every car alarm off in tescos when I left :chevy:

Get it trailored straight to the exhaust making man.... :thumbup:

My "headers" join up to a 3" Flowmaster cat back system, one exit driver´s side rear.

I agree with Twisted. Search "chevy camaro Z28 exuast system Headers" on ebay as it took me a while to find em. That is a great option.

Thanks for the heads-up - and the search words. I was struggling to find it too!

Does look good, even if only as a stopgap. 420 mile round trip is a PITA though!

No probs at all. You could try and get it delivered by someone like Lepsons or get a man in a van type quote? I think it looks slightly better than a stop gap. Ideally want to avoid dropping the exhausts by the back tyres and do a proper dual exit rear. Looks great :)

I've owned IROC's since the ear 90s and I pretty much live and breathe them so shout if you want to call me or or meet up.

Glad you got what you were after and this must be an exciting weekend for ya!
