Pretty sure I have the Rochester dualjet carb on my 1980 229. Most of the vacuum ports have been capped and wondering if someone can tell me what these are supposed to be for and if it is in a suitable state. It take a while upon start up before it lets me so much as touch the throttle or the car will stall. Also sometimes if I put my foot flat to the floor at around 50 it will have a momentary loss off power before it kicks back into life. The car overall feels pretty gutless but then again it is a 229. Here are some pics.

Here are the ports that are capped

These 3 have no pipes on nor do the 3 on the airbox

Is this pipe for a water jacket that coolant should be running through?

This thing seems pretty bodged up too and there is an arm there that does nothing at all as it's not connected to anything

Also, what is this thing?

Thanks guys. :D

HI and welcome.
I don't think I can help you with the pipes on the carb but the misfire I might be able to suggest something.

It looks like you have a HEI ignition system, these are pretty good reliable maint free ignition systems (he says with tongue in cheek). This could be the cause of your misfire when hitting the gas hard. I had a similar problem with my car. At idle it seems good and revving it seemed good but as soon as I put load on the engine a misfire occurred. New plug leads, cap and finger solved that problem. Alternatively you can pick up a complete distributor with all new internal gubbins cheaply.

I am not saying this will cure all your problems but it is worth looking at .

I'm gonna guess that the "thing" is some sort of vaccum cruise control that holds the throttle open? Most of the other ports would have been for smog or emissions control which is probably why they have been blanked off. Some states in America have stricter controls than others
Might also be worth checking that the vacuum advance pipe on the dizzy that goes to the carb Is in good order , a split will stop the dizzy advancing when you put your foot down and can cause it to be sluggish/misfire

Car Details:1986 Camaro, bought into Spain by me in 1993.
305 replaced by a 355, 750 Demon carb, RPM AirGap intake, Brodix heads, Hedman Hedders, 3" Flowmaster exhaust.
Wheels are Summit aluminium 5 spokes, tyres are 245 rear 225 front BF Goodrich.
B/M transmission, battery relocated to the rear, GoodMark 4" cowl steel hood.
Location:Spain East Coast
The best you can do first is buy a book covering Quadrajet carbs.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_nos ... carburetor

When I had my QJet I bought this book,
Rochester Carburetors, Revised Edition
http://www.amazon.com/Rochester-Carbure ... carburetor

When you get a book you can then start cleaning it up and rebuilding it.
BUT these things when old get rather crusty and fragile, you have to be very careful.
You could go for a reman carb from Summit or others, but if you matched it to the motor you
have now you´d be screwed later on if you went to another motor.

Thanks guys. When I get some money together I may just stick on an Edelbrock or a Holley or pehaps a Weber. I just wanna try to understand what's going on with this one for now and what's on there that's not needed. It did have cruise control but I thought that was just down to the electrical thing that holds the throttle open which you can see in the pics but maybe that big vacuum thing plays a role too.

Make sure ALL conections to the carb not being used are capped,
Yuo´ll more than likely have mixture issues if they´re not.

Bottom pic, that is part of the defunct cruise control.

Remember...You could go for a reman carb from Summit or others, but if you matched it to the motor you

To fit a Holley you´ll be needing a different intake.

Hi OK as you say you have a Rochester dual Jet which is as you car see only a two barrel carb, these are quite good on fuel and easy to work on.

Don't worry about the ports that are blocked off (emissions stuff)

The flat spot you have will either be that the accellerator pump on the carb is not working correctly either because the ballbearing in the base of the carb is missing because someone has lost it when cleaning it or the rubber on the plunger has shrunk or split.

or the normal thing I find is that the timing is retarded, either because the timing chain has stretched and when it's timed with a light and set at 10 deg advanced it's probably nearer too 2 deg after in some cases. so just wind the dizzy in the dirction that the vac advance would pull it about 6-8 deg or half inch on the outside of the dizzy, then try it too see if it's better, you may need the turn back you tick over a bit now.

or the vac advance isn't connected or working or both of the above

if you like you can message me for my phone number and i'll talk you through it.
