Yup - Ed fitted one of those on Wheeler Dealers.

But it still leaks from one corner. There are no leaks above or from screw holes etc. I fitted a new rubber gasket taking care not to over tighten but it is still doing it. Skimming the base of the sump isn't on, so I am hoping for a sealant solution.

It's either that or catch the stuff in a tray and pour it back in next spring!

I used red silicone on my diff cover, bloody good seal.
Hard to remove cover later.

For my trans pan I used a cork gasket.

I had the same problem with gearbox leaking so i changed the gasket, I made sure I got a gasket that was not cork and used sealant but I still had a leak
In the end it turned out to be the 'O' Ring on the kickdown cable which is located right side of the gearbox, well I say 'O' Ring it was really the hold down bolt.
The only way I found this out was the gearbox only really leaked after the car had stood for a day or two, this allowed all the oil to flow back into the bottom of the gearbox up to the 'O' Ring.

Well the gasket is done and I'll report back with the sealant name if it works!

Hi, sorry if this is a bit late. I fitted an LED conversion kit from one of the big US vendors; cost about USD 100.00. Straight bolt in with a bit of simple wiring to do. Essentially it's a a couple of led arrays in amber and white that replace the the conventional bulb for the reversing light, the ambers flash when signalling and the whites illuminate when reversing- can't remember if both operate when reversing and indicating! Red brake light remains as red brake light. Works pretty well; let me know if you would like me to dig out details of the manufacturer? Alternative would be to swap the original white reversing light bulb for an amber one and just hook up the indicator wire after disconnecting the reverse wire- reversing lights are not an MOT requirement. Or install RS reversing lights below the bumper and either use them as reversing lights with the standard white bulbs of swap to yellow bulbs and use as indicators. All the wiring is pretty simple- if I can do it- anyone can!

Transmission oil pans.

99% of the time the leaking pan is caused by the natural reaction of "It's leaking, need to tighten the bolts some more".
Take the pan off and lay it like this on a flat surface

Image

Look along the edge that's on the flat surface. If there is a gap between the bolt holes, it's been overtightened.
The good news is all it takes to fix is service tool #1

Image

Clean both surfaces and use a good quality gasket. The cheap Chinese one will work out real expensive because you will be replacing it after a few months.
My favorite is Fel-Pro because one of my gaskets came with these

Image

Thread them into the transmission case, put the gasket over them, then the oil pan.
If you don't have these just use grease to hold the gasket in place.
Tighten the bolts very lightly and evenly all the way round. Now just using the socket extension, no ratchet or T-bar, just the extension, go round tightening each bolt until they are as tight as possible.
You can use a torque wrench to get them to 10 foot pounds, but you will find them very close just tightening them by hand. And resist the urge to just tighten them a bit more, the pan will leak.
Never used sealant and never had any leaks.

Those dodgey wheeler dealers eh

Ye the MOT thing is always interesting, as sportsroof was saying, the rules are there - you have testers that abide to them and others that don't. I've seen even modern U.S cars (2010 Mustangs) with red indicator lights driving around over here. There is a historic allowance in that cars before a certain year can 'break' the current regulations but i think that's cars prior to the 60's, to help in preserving the historic appearance. For example, they can have the old style license plates too.

Anyway back to your car.

The tail (running) lights all run off of the brown wire. Even the front running lights will have a brown colour wire. This is ok as is. The Dark Green (right hand side) and Dark Blue (left hand side) wires are the ones that carry the Stop and the Indicator signal. In it's simplest form - run a new wire from the brake switch (attached to the brake pedal) all the way back to the Stop Tail bulb holder, to replace the Dark Green and Dark Blue on each side. Take the wire you just took off the bulb holder and use it to replace the light green wire on the reverse light (light green carries the reverse light signal). Do this for each side. In theory that's it, however, the signal for the indicator and brake merge at some point and i'm trying to work out where this happens. Wiring diagrams i've found so far a bit rubbish.

Hope that's made sense so far, definitely don't want you having extra lights stuck on the car!
:shifty: you can have red winkers so long as its before 73 dude

Maybe too late for you but Nathan over on the Mustang forum has his own business doing LED conversions for classics and can make yellow flashers appear through red lens thus maintaining original look but getting MOT compliance - go see some of his work here. He's also fixed a number of other non-car related lighting problems for me (US traffic lights!) and is a top bloke
