Hi all can any one recommend a good engine builder for a 327 in the south east, looked at either probuild, jez at custom power at paint or autopontiac. Any one used these or any other recommendations. Cheers

My very good friend Andy Blackett has just started his own business called Blackart performance in Amersham, I cannot reccomend him highly enough with over 20 years experience of rebuilding and racing camaros and chevy engines, gearboxes and axles, to put it bluntly if he doesn't know it it's not worth knowing when it comes to camaros his own one is a ten second street legal first gen. He has done all the work on my SS and his prices are very reasonable as he does it for the love of it rather than profiteering(plus he hasn't registered for vat yet as he is a new business so that makes him 20% cheaper than everyone else), service with a smile every time and a real nice knowledgable guy, give him a call on 07863 556748 and mention Paul with the SS gave you his number

Autopontiac built the 383 stroker engine in my car about 4 years ago... but they've lots of the major work on my car so I have a long (and mostly happy) relationship with them...

Have to agree with chevy-stu, Robin at Autopontiac has many years experience and his knowledge is second to none unlike many in this country.
He does good work and looks after some very nice cars for their owners .

I've seen lots of other names come up over the years on various forums for many other reputable builders, so I'd suggest go with who you feel is best ...

How deep are your pockets would also be a consideration? I have seen people do better work than john Webster and Andy Robinson put together for less than half the price

That's true but the secret is to find them ...
The foundation of engine building is precision machining which means skilled operator +time+good equipment, sadly put that list together and it will not be the cheap end of the market .
However get your machining done at a reputable place and you can save a lot by taking your time and doing your own assembly .

Very true but engine building and machining are two different disciplines and skill sets and one does not nessecarily require the other, also there are some very good reasonable companies to outsource any machine work to, I use what used to be called green and weatherbys in watford (now TK Cramer I believe) for any machine work and always have done( they resurfaced my lightened flywheel for me 2 weeks ago)if I were an engine builder and had to have all the equipment they have to hand my labour rates and overheads would reflect that with the costs of machine maintenance and space required, it's a great option to use a company like auto pontiac if you know you will require lots of different machine work and they have the gear to hand but for a straightforward engine build apart from having the Pistons attached to the conrods you done need any of the heavy gear, my last 305 build was completed in the back of my old plant fitting works transit van(thanks a-plant ), that was ten years ago and it's still going strong today
