We did Route 66 in 07
Absolutely fantastic. We did ours through
www.completenorthamerica.co.uk in fact here is the link to it

Don't get me wrong, the trip was good as all the accommodation gets booked for you but I really wish we had done it ourselves. For example the trip diverts you off to Begas. We had done Vegas before and tbh didn't enjoy it
More time somewhere else would have been better for example Chicago as we did have any time at all there and regret it.
If you need any pointers as what to see and not miss when there give me a shout. As usual when we go to the US I have tons of books and brochures
(i.e don't miss the Cadillac Ranch, Midpoint Cafe, Meteor Crater etc etc)
One part of the trip in particular stands out for me and that was coming into Holbrook, Arizona - we drove into a real bad storm and as we had hired a convertible Mustang we only just managed to stop and get the roof up in time before getting wet - the storm was that bad that all traffic on the highway came to a complete stop. According to locals the storm was actually a mini-tornado
.
Speaking of the highways - the old Route 66 does still exist but only about 90% of it. You can get to places using the main Highway but we followed the old Route 66 as much as we possibly could and it is much much better as you get to see a lot more and take your time.
Keep your eye open for rattlers and turantulas too - we almost ran over a turantula - he was just sauntering across the road and we went straight over the top of it. We stopped to have a quick look and my god he was huge. I will have to dig some of my pictures out.
It was one great holiday but in heinsight I would have done it myself and not through the company.
If you need any pointers as to the hotels we stayed in - give me a shout.
Cheers
