Hello everyone,

Following my (short) life long obsession with the 3rd gen Camaro (now 28) I went to look at my first 3rd gen today, 86' sports coupe, unfortunately it needed a 'bit' of TLC... rust around the outer parts of both rear wheel arches and door panels which would of required some welding, needed new outer T top seals/door seals, work to interior, new discs and a few other bits, also the clutch was really light, as in foot to the floor light?? i understand these are hydrullic clutches so had a feeling they may of been something up with it? (could be wrong)
Asking price was over £1500 with over 100k on the clock, seller would'nt go any lower so I decided to walk away... maybe Someone could let me know if the asking price was correct for the condition of the car? I certainly appreciate these are old cars and will need some maintaining and possible work but I just wasn't sure on this one..

I have to say the seller was a nice guy and spoke for ages about the car and let me have a drive which really did cement my need for one! I really am looking for a V6 rather than a V8 as for insurance reasons and running costs, if anyone out there knows of one available or ever thinks of selling theirs then please let me know!

They don't come up that often to be honest, 3rd gens seem slim on the ground. I was trying to link some URLs from ebay but kept getting an error when I try to post them.

Is the red one currently on ebay the one you looked at?

There were a couple of reasonable ones that went in December on ebay around the same mark, do a search on completed listings to give you an idea.

Sometimes though, expensive ones come up. Again, on completed listings there is one at about £4.5k

Just keep looking, from what you say the one you looked at needs a lot. T-Top seals aren't a big deal (I've got some for sale cheap if you end up needing them). Even a clutch isn't the end of the world if the car is the right price, I'd concentrate on finding one with minimal rust if you can....

A v8 will be cheaper for parts, easier to find, faster, more fun, probably not more than a few pounds extra to Insure over a V6 and not very much more on fuel, have you got any insurance quotes? You will be surprised how cheap yanks are to insure either as a classic or modified car

If you´re into cars a V6 just doesn´t cut it.
The motor will disappoint you and they´re butt ugly.

Cheers for the replies guys, yeah the red one is the one I went to see, it really was more about the body work, and if im honest I would of gone for it had it been cheaper, I had seen a black 88 RS go on eBay in December for £1495! Only had rust around the filler cap and the AC needed a re-gas which wouldn't bother me seeing as it had T-tops, wish I had made a bid on it! I had given a V8 a thought but this will be a daily driver, I do have a quote for a v6 and it wasn't bad seeing as im jumping from a 1.25 fiesta! So anything will seem faster anyway I know the performance aspect is important but I really like the look and feel of these cars more than anything.

How much of a difference are we talking in terms of Mpg on a 305 V8 vs a V6?

It is a minefield for a newbie when ive seen so many varying prices!

Depends on whether you're comparing to the 2.8 or 3.1 v6. Wouldn't have thought there would be more than 2-4 mpg in it though

When I drove my 350 v8 back from London (to the south west) I got 26mpg out of it which I was well chuffed with. I was cruising though, wouldn't be that good round town but never really worked it out to be honest

V8 is definitely the way to go, but manuals aren't that common.....

With a v6 your going to be using the go pedal a lot more frequently than a v6, v6's are a lot cheaper as people don't want them so the price is usually a lot lower. To me the entire point of a camaro is the growl from that V8

Be sure to ask where the car was in the States, you don´t want a rust belt car.
Look underneath everywhere.

When I was in Germany I bought an Opel Monza, wishing to save tax and fuel I got the 2.5 not the 3.0.
BIG mistake, the 2.5 was a well know gas guzzler, obviously no one had told me.
It lacked the get up and go of a 3.0.

That's very interesting...well The vibe seems to be a V8 but as someone else stated the V6's are cheaper to buy....hmmm, Also im not fussed if the V8 was Auto, I was told that if I did go for a V6 then I shouldn't bother with an Auto as I would get better response with a manual but it didn't matter with a v8?

Just to jump in real quick (haven't read below, busy day) Rocky (Rich) has a 3rd gen Camaro V8 for sale, was a customer of his and Rocky did all the maintenance so it's well looked after (as was it by the customer). Give him a call at American Technique and see what the deal is, only came up for sale a week ago if that. Good luck!
